I'm relatively seasoned in shopping and building standard desktop-based machines (aka: i7) but I'm in the market to build my very first proper server and was hoping for a little help. I currently run a single machine that is both my daily workstation as well as my media+document storage/plex...
I see. Thanks for your recommendations everyone. I do have one final question though: Any reason I shouldn't go with the Mark 1 over the Mark 2? Just a pricing difference due to the armor and 2nd Ethernet?
For the board, what about something more like this?

Looks better and has faster RAM support (though I know we just established that isn't extremely important). Not really seeing many other differences.
Mobo's all generally seem...
Good to know. I'm currently running Corsair Dominator 6GB (2x3GB) 1600 which is also in need of an upgrade (want to take it to 16GB) but I guess it's safe to stick with 1600 then.
Seems like a pretty decent board (don't love the camo but I can manage). Looks like it can't handle very high speed memory though, think that's an issue? I was considering picking up form 2400 G.SKILL ram to go with the Maximus (assuming I went that route).
Honestly I don't really have a great answer other than if I'm going to spend the money to do an upgrade I want to make sure I have the absolute best I can so it lasts me as long as possible until my next one. I also would like it to look nice/high end as well. I don't currently have plans to...
After doing some research it seems the general recommendation is to go with the Z97 for my use cases. Given that I am thinking the following unless anyone feels something else would be better:
ASUS Maximus VII Formula
Intel i7-4790k Haswell 4.0GHz
Hey guys,
Was hoping you would be able to give me some pointers on what I should be looking for in terms of a mobo upgrade. I'm currently running an Asus P6T Delux 1366 mobo with an Intel i7 Bloomfield 2.66GHz and it has been running perfectly fine but feeling like it may be time for an...
Yup. Thats it. They were $17.xx each as the sale of the day a little bit ago. I think they retail for like $65? Can't find them on the site right now though.
So I've looked around and havent been able to find anything on the subject. I was jus curious if anyone has found a way to keep the chrome title bar when the window is maximized:

Up until yesterday I was using 2x 24" monitors running off of a Radeon 4870 and everything was running fine. This morning I installed a second video card that I've had sitting in the closet which was an Radeon x800. I know this card has had driver issues with w7 due to it being legacy now but...
Temps are fine (about 36ºC) and the old HSF was this beast. I'm pretty sure that's not the issue though because it was literally an instant shutdown. There wasn't time for a CPU overheat or anything.
I ended up just reorganizing my desk so my case is on top and I can't accidentally kick it...
So I have a desktop that has been working fine for a good 9+ months with no complains. The other day the fan on my HSF died so I swapped it with the stock one that came with my processor. Ever since then something has been screwey with my desktop.
It would boot up perfectly fine and be...
Wow I like the pad. I currently use a Razer Goliathus and have previously used a Supermat. I thought these were big...I might have to grab one of those.
Thats a really nice setup. Not normally a fan of built in desks, etc but it looks really slick.
Heres mine. Pretty simple but I'm moving relatively soon so I'm going to be doing a nice upgrade when I get there. Just got these 2x S2409W's a day ago.
And here is my living room where my server lives
Looking to sell a mint condition Escient DVDM-552 media server complete with all accessories. Escient is a division of D&M Holdings (same people that own Denon, Marantz, Boston Acoustics, etc). This is a multi-zone music and movie manager used in professional home installations. 500GB internal...
If I'm working on software I like to have API's or other useful pages open on the other monitor.
If I'm playing a game I like to have my IM's open on another monitor so I know if I need to alt tab or not to respond
If I'm watching a movie I like to be able to still do stuff on my other monitor...
So heres the deal. I've been watching the forums for a while now and see lots of mixed opinions. So i figured I'd make my own thread and say specifically what I'm looking for and see if there are any choices that seems like the best. Yes I know there are a ton of these threads and I apologize...
So I currently have 3x19" LCD's which I'm looking to upgrade to 2x24" (taking suggestions on those too) and would like to potentially put them up on arms. I'll be freeing up some desk space switching back to 2 and would like to maybe even free up some more if possible.
However, all the arms I...
Not trying to take this off topic but: Do all Best Buy's honor their warranty and all? I'm at an internship for the summer and want to buy it but would like to be able to use the BB back home for warranty stuff if necessary.
So far I'm thinking I definately gotta grab this one. Seems absolutely perfect for me. Are they exclusive with Best Buy however? Has anyone found another site online or anything?
Yeah, I figure both are reputable companies so they both gotta be good heh. And I already have an Asus board thats in my server which I've had running nice for a good 4 years with no problems.
Thats what I thought, I switched from EVGA (my original choice) to the P6T cause of people talkin on here. Pretty sure that's how I found the cooler too.
Just wanted to run my choices by you guys before I ordered. Heres what I'm getting:
Currently have:
Lian-Li Case
Corsair TX750w Power Supply
ATI 4870 1GB for crossfire with ATI x800
What I'm about to order to go along with it:
Asus P6T Deluxe
Intel Core I7 920 (2.66Ghz)
Corsair...
Hmm. Yeah the mobo and cpu cooler were two that I really had no idea and just went with the top rated on newegg that was the right socket and supported crossfire. Anyone second this opinion? Or are they pretty much equal?
As for the RAM. Wouldnt 1600 be a better match for my CPU than 1333?
I'm looking to do a large upgrade when I get back from CES next week and wanted to make sure it all looked pretty good and worth the money since its currently around $1,300 of parts. Here is what I'm lookin at:
Motherboard: EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 - $300 (upgrade from Abit IP35)
CPU: Intel Core...
Yeah its Truepower and yeah the raidmax was one of those crappy PSU's that came with a $35 case when i was just looking for a case to throw my components in heh. I'll see if I can borrow a friends PSU or somethin.
