Baldurs Gate 3 - Official Discussion Thread (2019)

i'm really struggling on my beastmaster build, the idea was do be in the thick of it, with heavy armor and a great axe, AC of 18, but i just get pommelled, my fucking bear dies in one hit every time as well. not sure if its my unfamiliarity with dnd, or what?
loving it so far though, even though its a steep learning curve

edit: the beasts get a big boost at level 5, 8 and 11, it seems, so maybe i just need to get to 5.

I usually wait a few months to buy a new game but too excited to wait with this. And Larian has a pretty solid track record and not releasing unfinished games
Welll.... they did release difinitive versions of dos-1 and dos-2 with more refinements and content - esp dos-2 i loved that extra content they added in the last area.... i expect baulder gate 3 to see a lot of improvments in later area since they were not part of early access... so I think i'll wait at least a couple of months before i play - besides i'm ultra busy right now so it meshes well.

I only played 4 hours with my buddy last night but in that time I was blown away with the depth of story telling, the movie like quality of the voice acting, the attention to details in the environment, just the whole package. I mean there's a reason industry vets said don't expect very many games to be this good. There's a reason why it's so well reviewed by critics and overwhelmingly positive on Steam. It's already reached top 10 highest concurrent players all time

This game is more cinematic than any RPG I’ve ever played.

3E didn't need fixing. It's probably WoTC's most revered iteration in the tabletop space. However, 3E had a ton of extensions and historically was somewhat difficult to translate as a video game. I think Temple of Elemental Evil was the closest to pulling it off (3.5E iirc)

4E was the direct result of video game influence. For whatever reason, hardcore D&D fans didn't receive it well. I personally liked it. It did distill things from 3.5E down a lot. Some of that 3E "flavor" was seemingly missing. More focus on combat, less on flavor, etc. I think the hardcore peeps didn't like because they couldn't use some bullshit out-of-combat trick to break the game. Yeah, you know who you are...

5E is trying to recapture the magic of 3E while executing some of 4E's streamlining. Basically, WoTC found a compromise.

3E had no class or XP balance, and it took all, and I mean all, of 3.5 with every splatbook, to fix it. 4E was Warhammer Prentend-Time Power Hour and just trash. It wasn't video games, it was minis that fucked it up. 5E is straight up incomplete to sell subscriptions online. If anything, video games fucked up 5E, but only in the recurring online subscriptions sense.

Also the mega-shilling for this game is so blatant, that alone should shake anyone's confidence.

It's been ages, but I do remember a lot of people having problems with 3E that were primarily fixed with 3.5. 4E doing stuff with minis was interesting, but I do recall a lot of complaints about how combat focused it became at the expense of actual RPG stuff. If Hasbro is intent on spending years with 5E I think it will get there. From what I've seen it does look like a good system for newer players, which does seem like the intent. They're never going to draw back the hardcore 2.5 and earlier folks, better to find ways to bring in newer players or people that haven't played in ages.

Blatant mega-shilling? Come on man, pull your head out of your ass. Just because the game isn't for you doesn't mean the entire fucking world is lying about their enjoyment of it. Chill. Not every game is specifically designed around what you want. It's fine. You don't need to be pissy about it.

Better stuff.jpg

I got my Baldurs Gate fix right here :p Controller support has really improved just tried it. I guess I didn't own the Season Pass 1 and Season Pass 2 which came out mid last year
Owl Cat just asked for some feedback on their DLCs but the poll is closed since a few days. I held off playing the game due to lack of controller support at launch didn't play for a entire 1-2 years after that.

Going to give this a try later today with a friend and co-op

first time playing a game like this, any suggestions for getting started?

5E is already EOL, they're preparing D&D One now. I'm hoping that this will lead to One development, but only time will tell.

And the shilling is everywhere, I'm not talking about people posting in this thread, I'm talking about the media hype.

I'm not going to hold my breath, but we'll see.

It's a game that ticks a lot of the right boxes. There hasn't been a CRPG with this kind of push (and, presumably budget) in ages. Not to mention how well received and liked both of the Divinity: Original Sin games were. Larian's marketing has been very good and well targeted. Just because the game is popular and hyped does not mean it's all manufactured. There's obviously some people just saying stuff because the game is popular and they're trying to bank on that success. This happens with every popular game. However, the general audience reception so far has been pretty good and that speaks volumes. It might peter off as the days go, depending on if the later acts of the game hold up or not, but for now it doesn't seem like the hype has been overly misplaced.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
There are fun stories, fun choices, and I absolutely love the voice acting and character interactions (even when they make me mad).

my guy actually said he uninstalled because someone on the internet said they didn't like the game

he finds an excuse to uninstall and refund every single game...literally every game he does the same thing...before a game comes out he's so excited and pre-orders...then he plays for a few hours, posts a bunch of screenshots and refunds it...go through his post history and you see the same pattern for every single game...he never plays more than a few early levels of any game

he finds them too difficult or he says he gets eye strain etc...it's insanity...he's not a gamer yet he continues to force himself to buy games

Is the game worth getting/buying if you never played any of these before ?

Just hate if it holds my hand. I like Left 4 Dead games because you can do either.

Save your money people playing it are just trying to have fun which they can't find.

I actually agree with Axman I had to look up 5E and what it really meant just a certain setting for Dungeon and Dragons games like Spelljammer.
The game doesn't do past RPGs any service at all everyone playing it is just trying to get their money's worth so they don't get ripped off I like did.
How many people got ripped off by Diablo 4? A bunch of sheep there too

I'm wondering if my eyestrain woes were from having Post Processing on but I'm not going to redownload the game to find out.
I don't think that was the problem I had it turned off at the start but I think it was reenabled.

It was a disappointing experience. Even with tempered expectation, now that I stand at an end and look back? This was a game that did not need to be made. The connections to the previous games feels contrived. It feels like a crass exercise in commerce.
The story elements felt disparate, the plot armour given to some of the characters felt oppressive, the jokes were painful, the music dull, the path was linear and short. And the way they treated the past was utterly disrespectful. They claimed this game was made by fans, but the sheer fact they'd toss aside iconic legendary voice actors to recast them for no particular reason is... beyond me.
You, Larian, dug up the past just to make a few quick dollars. You took something that was adored by people across the globe to desecrate those memories in service of commerce. It's disgusting. And for what? A game closer to mediocre than great?
This isn't Baldur's Gate. This isn't even 5e D&D. This is just a greedy exercise of meglomania.

95% of Steam reviews over the last 30 days are 'overwhelmingly positive'...so cherry picking 1 or 2 bad reviews does not mean much...the game got excellent reviews across the board and most players seem to love it

You seem incredibly desperate to find something, anything, to validate your feelings. You didn't enjoy it, that's fine, you don't need to use other people's thoughts to justify your own. If you have nothing of value or substance to add to the thread, move on.

Both of you are trolling me personally over a Videogame if you didn't play it be quiet.

and? I fail to see the significance of some random person's opinion

It definitely doesn't hold your hand. If you're not sure if you'd like it or not I'd suggest looking at some videos and seeing if the gameplay appeals to you. CRPGs are incredibly hard to recommend to new players without really getting to know their tastes and whether or not they have the patience to deal with the trial-and-error nature of the genre.

Every single person here is familiar with your posts and your personality. You aren't fooling anyone. Fuck off.

the game is not my type of game but I can still appreciate it based on the positive reviews and word of mouth...I'm not going to buy it as I don't like the D&D turn based structure...pausing every time before each move does not appeal to me in any way...I prefer real time action

I'm not going to say it's a bad game just because it's not my type...seems like an excellent game if you're into that genre

Cool, this feels like the steam forums. Let's argue about being woke next. Or maybe discuss how the character customization is very limited, which it is.

Go on youtube and look up some "things I wish i knew" or beginners guides. Off the top of my head?
1. Friendly fire is always on. Read spell descriptions.
2. Press T if you need to inspect something or see something that you don't understand in a description.
3. Don't run and gun. Take your time to setup your team in position before a fight.
