No avatars?

I've been going through the new forum options, and although there is an option to toggle displaying avatars, I can't find an option to set one for myself. Am I missing it somewhere, or is the feature disabled?
 
We will not be enabling that feature...ever.
 
I don't think avatars were never and never will be enabled. Too [H] on the 56k users and too many users would probably have soft porn in their avatars.
 
I agree, but disagree, to a visual person avatars help destingush and remember person from person. But the faster the better :)
 
but it's definately true that there's no way to prevent 'inappropriate' or offensive avatars.
 
Our 56Kers don't like them. I don't like them. They get abused. I have always had an issue with guys using hot chicks for their avatars. I never want to associated a babe with a computer geek named Bob from Utah. That is just wrong... ;)

First of all, ANYONE using 56k modems nowadays should be banned from using the whole entire internet...I mean come on...it's the 21st century ppl...modems are SO last century... :eek: :rolleyes: :eek: ...

Second of all, even if ppl used pr0n then they would be banned...it wouldn't be much of a problem...

I don't use 56k but you'd be surprised at how many do...
If people using porn got banned, there'd probably be like 20 banned members a day.

You might want to look into broadband penetration statistics for North America. Obviously from what you have stated here, you would be surprised.

I agree, sometimes it is easier to figure out some users from their avatar and it is easier to just look for their avatar when skimming posts. But again, on this board it would only be trouble. Speed would be the biggest issue, with porn and other things in the avatars following a close second. While I do like having an avatar, the server load it would create probably just isnt worth it.

You're an idiot. Normally I'm not that blunt, but the truth must be spoken in this case.

I'm on 56k, and not by choice. There is no broadband available in my area. Let me repeat that... no broadband. No cable, no DSL, and ISDN is just too expensive. So think (if you can) before speaking next time. Thank you, have a nice day.

With that said, I don't have any problem with avatars. Mine is 6k or so, so it isn't a bandwidth issue. I do agree with the points you guys have made though, and on a collection of forums this large, I can understand why you have it disabled.

Not everyone lives in the city, and you can't get broadband out in the country.
 
Wonder if there is a way of toggle them on for just mods and Ol' time [H]'ers? In any case that works for me. It does lend to a more professional looking site. Avatars could turn into a gen-may of thier own. :p

There are a lot of people that use 56k and that is the only option for them. Have you seen the prices/speeds of broadband in the smaller or rural areas? I pay 88$ for my cable/internet package, and, the people in BFE would pay 80$ for a craptastic 256/128 connection, and they still have to pay thier phone bill on top of that!

Avatars are awesome in moderation, but, I prefer faster load times.

But where do you make the cut on who is an "old time [H]'er"? That could get pretty ugly pretty quick. "But he got one, and I didnt, and Ive been here since 2000 and hes only been here since 2003". I can see it now. Kyle, leave them off.
 
They will not be turned on for anyone....except maybe God and then it is still going to take a really good argument to show me the light. :eek:
 
I hate avatars. They just seem so pointless and distracting. If I need to identify a poster I just look at the name. Even on a cable modem it will still take longer to load 20 avatars/page than 0 avatars/page. I'm happy the way it is.
 
Agree'd. Avatars get old, really quick. Even on sites where the watch the size etc, people put in moving avatars, porn, or disguised porn, etc. So, IMO no avatars is the way to go. Besides, with people posting pics of thier mod jobs, work logs, etc, 56k'ers will have a hard enough time hehe
 
I like them, but as far as any message board that doesn't have them, it's not an issue. If I don't like the board, then I don't go there, avatars or not.

If it wasn't for the fact that people change them all the time. That is one of the things I hate about MSN Messenger too with people changing their names all the time. Then I have to look at their email to figure out who they are. In most forums that have avatars, I browse them with them disabled because I want to know a person by their name and not avatar that they will probably change sooner or later.

Bullshit. All that would do is encourage spamming, which is part of the reason postcount is not displayed with the posts.

That wouldnt work because how you differentiate between those that contributed and those that are post whore's? I mean I could go through and post Hi on every single thread and quickly get a post count in the couple thousands, does that mean I contributed to the forum in any way? Granted, that would probably get me banned, but its a valid arguement. Face it, with avatars its either on for all or off for all, and I agree, keep them off for all.

Do you know how much spamming one would have to do to actually GET a high enuff post count??? :rolleyes: The mods/admins would/should have warned/banned the spammer WELL before s/he reaches a high post count...the mods/admins just need to learn to be a bit more strict and follow thru on the punishment that the rules state IMO

Like I said above...it would take too many usless posts to reach that high status...you would be banned before you got even close to the number needed...[H] don't need ppl who post a ton of usless posts...it is likely that the post whore would get banned in a hurry

HA!!! I'd like to see you do that right now...you would be banned within 5 minutes and no avatar for you and no more [H] for you...

I actually kinda encourage the current [H]'ers to do this so they can reveal what kind of [H]er s/he really is...if s/he is loyal and obey the rules then the person would not do stoopid things like that...if s/he just wants to be an idiot and post a ton of usless things JUST to be able to get an avatar then that will indicate to us that that person does not deserve to be in this community and should be banned never to recieve the avatar s/he oh so wanted to have...out of the current [H]ers here, the ppl that would do this disloyal act would all be doing this almost all at once...better to filter them all out now in one fell swoop than have to put up with them day aby day by day...we don't need ppl doing a lot of stoopid things here...they can go somewhere else and take their usless stoopid actions with them cause it is non-productive and isn't needed here



Now I'm not trying to talk Kyle into doing my idea or some other form of it or anything...I'm just saying what *I* think about the idea and giving my $0.02...

Also...for the ppl that DON'T want avatars AT ALL then there IS an option to turn them off whether they are enabled to certain ppl or not...that's easy to do...those ppl don't have to worry about avatars or not cause they wouldn't be affected...this affects the ppl who DO like/want avatars...NOT the ppl who do not since it is VERY simple to just turn them off in Options
 
I find avatars very useful in identifying people and I thi nk they are nice : ) plus all above mentioned problems can be solved by having them not be shown by default for guests and users and have it an option in the UserCP whether they are shown are not.

-So now they aren't annoying, rather they would be off
-Aren't tough on 56kers, they could be off
-Aren't particulary demanding, with them being turned off by default + they could be hosted off site

etc.
 
As a matter of style, I dislike avatars - I think they create clutter, disrupt the order of the page, and flashing avatars are like personal advertisements. There is a forum for artwork, and IMO the pictures belong there.

This isn't a contest here. We aren't trying to filter the good posters from the bad. Even if only five people started spamming then that would be annoying and would bring down the quality of the forum. The mods have enough to do already; they don't need to deal with a bunch of people spamming to try to get an avatar. If the is an incentive to get more posts, then some people will get more posts the easiest way they can. Avatars are a stupid idea and giving avatars only to members with high post counts is even stupider. It is not going to happen and it is not worth arguing.
 
I once heard that if you leave a page on the forums up over night, the avatars will come to life and steal your soul. Sounds pretty evil to me.
