Microsoft’s next Xbox, coming 2028, envisions hybrid computing

Top Microsoft executives wanted to build a new hybrid cloud gaming platform. But are they still doing it?

Those are the words on just one slide from a leaked presentation dubbed “The Next Generation of Gaming at Microsoft,” which appears to be a May 2022 pitch document entirely around this idea.

The team suggested it would need to ink partnerships with AMD for the silicon by the first quarter of this year to lock down the company’s Navi 5 graphics — for reference, we’re only on Navi 3 right now — as well as potentially nabbing the company’s Zen 6 CPU cores. (It’s also considering Arm.)
Microsoft suspected it would also need an NPU (machine learning AI coprocessor) to provide a wide variety of benefits, including super resolution, latency compensation, frame rate interpolation and more

Just a comment:

RDNA 5 is rumoured to launch in 2025/2026 & by 2028 we can definitely expect RDNA 6

So if MS sticks to the timeline, then the next xbox could launch with RDNA 6 (or even RDNA 7) tech

Otoh, if they finalized RDNA 5, then its just a matter of securing (3nm?) die space & releasing in 2026 itself.

Outside shot is they could go with samsung 4nm & still launch in 2026

Xbox Moving 'Full Speed Ahead' on Next Gen Console

“Microsoft is moving "full speed ahead" on its next generation console, an internal email from Xbox president Sarah Bond has revealed. From a report: The email, obtained by Windows Central and verified to be genuine by Microsoft, also announced the formation of a game preservation team at Xbox. "We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation," Bond said, reiterating comments made in February when the console's existence was officially announced. No further information was shared regarding the hardware itself, nor when fans might be able to buy it, but documents leaked in 2023 suggested Microsoft plans to release the next Xbox in 2028. Regardless, with Microsoft seemingly making its development a priority, it will likely be available sooner rather than later.”

Makes sense that they would advance it since they don't have a plan for pro this gen

Apparently no series S next gen but a handheld instead !!

Historically, Microsoft has acknowledged that their next console was in development 2-2.5 years before it launched. Combined with the news of the PS5 mid-gen refresh, it's probably coming out on or the week before Black Friday 2026.

Perhaps but what if, given previous statements made by Microsoft staff "Thin OS" is a consumer-available license for an XBox OS that is compatible with a limited pre-approved hardware set?

Cary Golomb made a very good point. Consumer APUs will not have memory bandwidth (256 bit) but custom hardware by Microsoft could.

My best guess is that Microsoft is doing several prototypes now. Probably custom Xbox AMD handheld & a premium Surface Handheld but on standard hardware (intel/amd/nvidia/qualcomm APUs)

Consumer handhelds currently don't have the bandwidth but by 2028? who knows what's on the market?
AMD could update their Z platform SoC to include a unified GDDR memory essentially making it a low-power XBox/PS.

This is as generic as it get:
"It’s been nearly six months since we came together as an organization. Our collective achievements in that timeframe are tremendous. Everyone should feel incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about the opportunities ahead," Sarah said, "We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation."

Wouild it release in 2017 instead of 2016 and with the usual ambition, does the email would say we are moving at reasonable pace, focused on a good but nothing special technological leap between generation.

The choice of words need to be adjusted to the idea that the last 6 months was tremendous in achievement for Xbox.

They better call it something not stupid this time.
This sound almost impossible.

Xbox Series X 2 sound a bit stupid and anything that follow the Xbox Series X that is not Xbox Series X 2 will be like always confusing.

Xbox

Xbox 360

Xbox One, One S and One X

Xbox Series X and Series S

What could the next generation name be that would not be stupid ?
The generation scheme being historically nothing->360->One->Series

They could try to do a Nintendo and this name pick a name good enough that people use it instead of having the word Xbox in it, not sure if they have world brand power enough for that and would be such a departure.

MSN Xbox Live Surface

And probably time for at least one more half-baked branding to be born and die before it actually comes out.

XBoxXP
Then the following generations can be XBox 7, 8, 10, 11 then just start naming them by the year of release Xbox 2050, etc..

yBox

But in all seriousness Xbox <year> sounds pretty good. It gets them on a logical naming schedule that isn't matching ps.

But here is the problem. Every year you are past the initial run, it is increasingly obvious how old it is.

PS5 or Xbox 2020. Man I'm 2008, you are so 2000 and late

Can make the "same gen mid-cycle" release challenging to name from the "new gen" if they want for such notion to still exist.

Xbox 2025 X that release in 2028 sound strange.

That’s where iterative upgrades come in, if they are selling the hardware at cost then updating the console every couple of years instead of waiting for large upgrade cycles the naming convention becomes part of the marketing. Oh your still using a 2025 even though the 2027 and 2029 are available…

Why is your Xbox so old why haven't you updated to the most recent version.

This naming scheme, while not perfect, is 1000x better the previous names.

It may not stick though. Remember when Unreal Tournament tried to go to the year format

At this point just call it the Xbox 360-2

The 360 was the ONLY successful Xbox console. build on that design philosophy instead of trying to make better-and-better Gamepass subscription machines.

After they did the Xbox One, and how the marketed it, I always thought they'd do an Xbox Zero. Why? Because it sounds edgy.

Only if they cross promote it with Coke.

Coke Zero, no sugar added
Xbox Zero, No scrubs need apply.

They should just call it Xbox 5 or Xbox V. Sony's next Playstation will likely be called PS6, and nobody will ever be confused. If Nintendo called the Wii U the Wii 2, then everyone would know that's the next generation console. The only reason they don't is because Sony is ahead of them but 1 number. So someone with an IQ of 5 will look at the PS6 vs Xbox 5 and think the Xbox is older and therefore a worse product. Which is why Microsoft's marketing department is finding stupid names for their Xbox's. Except 5 year olds could come up with better names.

Never forget the old forestry service quote.
“There is a surprising overlap between the smartest of bears and the dumbest of tourists”.

The 6 vs 5 issue very much would be a problem.

They can simply call it the XBox 6 and internally clarify they considered the two units currently available to be distinctly different if they really feel the need to justify the name. Or they can just call it the XBox 5001, maybe get cute and give it an internal name of Odyssey.

XBox 5001, A Gaming Odyssey.

The slogan works.
