Hitachi 1TB Deskstar for 79.99 AR or 2 for $140 AR

still a good price even without the rebate... i just read the article about rebates not being paid out.... i still have a bad taste in my mouth from the Soyo motherboard newegg deal a few years back.

dude come on thats from 2001
wikipedia-

"The IBM Deskstar 75GXP, and several other models made around the same time, became infamous for their reportedly high failure rates. This led to the drives being colloquially referred to as "Deathstars".

Lawsuit

Despite failures being reported within the manufacturer warranty period (3 years), Michael T. Granito, Jr., an American user of IBM's 75GXP hard drive, filed a class-action lawsuit against IBM on 2001-10-16 for defects in the product causing it to "crash".[1] Without admitting responsibility, IBM settled this lawsuit in 2005.[2]"

"The Deskstar is the name of a product line of computer hard drives. It was originally produced by IBM until Hitachi bought IBM's hard drive division in 2002. From then on it was called the Hitachi Deskstar.

The last of the Deskstar series produced under IBM name was the 180GXP."

I have had 3 WD go belly up in the past 6 months (1 500GB AAKS brand new in less than 2 weeks, 2 320GB), no smart failures, nothing to warn, thank god I am geeky enough to have an LTO3 at the house to do backups of pics and vids of my family.

Every manufacturer has issues some time or another, I'd rather use Hitachi and Seagate right now.

That's a good price if the rebate comes through. I just grabbed a couple Samsung F1 drives and they seem to work well for me. I wouldn't hesitate getting these though if the price was right.

Every time Hitachi drive deals come, Deathstar gets brought up. Friggin stupid. Anyways, that $140 for 2 sounds pretty good...

I have company pref for hard drives and my #1 pref for any one my own comps is Hitachi. They last for ages on. While just as you every single HDD from WD that I ever had failed either in the first day or in the first year. I have never heard of Deathstar before. I love Hitachi and thats all I use, as for WD the prices might be great but my experience tells me to stay further away from them than we are from Neptune.

one word

Deathstar

I was working for IBM during the infamous "Deathstar" period. From what I understand the whole issue came from contaminants being introduced into the clean room. That was long ago and the Hitachi Deskstars have never had that issue and I've had nothing but good experiences with them. Still, If I was in charge at Hitachi I would have used a new name for the drives.

some Ford Pintos would explode during a rear end collision so that means that all Fords (or products from whomever buys Ford remnants when they go out of business in the future) will explode in rear end collisions.

so if "a" manufactures "b" and later decides to manufacture "c", and "b" has a problem, anything from that day forward manufactured by "a" will have problems, including, but not limited to "c".

Is this the way of thinking of the dudes who still refer to the Deathstar days?

Crown Vics were also plagued with this design flaw.

Back on topic, In for 2.

For the HDD ignorant...what is detremental about more platters? I am just looking for media storage...DVR, Movies, MP3, JPGS. I currently have 4 400gb seagates and 3 WD of varying sizes. I could replace all 7 drives for $150 and actually gain storage or implement RAID for a spare. Hell, I could mirror for a little over $200. I am at a smidge over 2tb right now. I had been looking at the WD Green drives at about $115 a piece.

more moving parts = more heat = more prone to failure

just a guess

Fewer platters mean that each platter has a higher density which translates into higher sequential read/write speeds (between drives with equal spindle speeds, ie 7200RPM) because for each linear inch the heads pass over they cover more data. If you are just using it for storage it doesn't really matter, but it can help on the system drive (which is why the 2 platter 640GB WD drives are so popular).

so tempting.

trying to not spend money right now.

Still waiting 6 months for this kinda stuff :)

ughhh i'm in the same boat bro. i just started realizing how much i';ve been blowing on old technology, and now i cant spend money on anything.

Nope, but if you put too much buttsex porn on it, it will.

Thanks, I just spit Dr. Pepper all over my monitor.:D

The only time you hear people talk about HDDs is when they fail. One guy said he'll only use Seagate, others have said they're brutally bad. Same with all of them.

The moral: No matter what you use, back up on a regular basis.

it also depends on how many units are sold. Ford sold a lot of tauruses and MS a lot of xboxes and people always complain about how much they break, well not shit --> there were million of them sold so obviously there will be more broken units. still doesn't explain why the piss poor quality of range rovers though

man i want one of these but i simply cant go for the MIR. sad... but oh well!

2 for $140 are you freaking kidding me? i bought a samsung f1 for $135 in september and i thought i landed a steal!

I'd be all over it if the delivery date weren't set for DECEMBER 20TH!!!!! Stupid tigerdirect and their warehouse problems!!!

Oh yeah, if you hadn't figured it out. I believe tiger direct now owns the CompUSA name.

How did you determine that?

EDIT - NM, I called and confirmed they are OOS.

Well, I put in for two on Friday.... but I ordered with some stuff I need to drop in stockings at Christmastime... (MicroSD cards).

I'm really hoping those drives show up soon, though, as the rebates need to be postmarked before later December...... that would really suck!
