Black Mesa Releasing Sept. 14th

When exactly has any Source engine game looked good? Even HL2 wasn't that great when it came out.

Get thee to the Cinematic Mod website. Source can easily look better than any number of vanilla AAA titles released in the last 1-2 years.

What when HL2 came out it was a preety nice looking game with the physics and all, only doom3 maybe and some other games back then looked better but noway to say back then it wasnt looking good that is really not true.

I always preferred the look of HL2 to Doom3's plastic everything.

And I'm excited about this release...sure it took forever, but it should still be fun. The graphics are dated, but still playable.

What other games are you comparing it to exactly? HL2 looked damn good in 2004. Doom 3 came out around the same time, and I think it looked like ass in comparison, save for the dynamic shadows.

wtf are you talking about? HL 2 was a damn fine looking game when it came out. I played it in DX7 with an MX440 and even then it was the best looking game out there at the time. that Lost Coast demo was also stunning looking when it came out.

Agreed, at the time it was awesome and looked great.

I remember the Lost Coast was going to be the first in a series of many levels that were supposed to be especially graphically demanding. Too bad that never panned out.

so the press release stated that the game will go up to Lambda Core and they are still working on Xen and BMDM...what is BMDM?

Half Life porn. but yeah, death match. in other news, beer is good and work is bad.

I'd have to agree, and I still think it's one of the better looking games around despite the fact that it's now over eight years old.

But all the kids want these days is plastic shiny looking graphics now with mega glowy blood effects and whatnot. Half-Life 2 is gritty and realistic looking, especially in the urban settings (City17, Ravenholm, yadda yadda). I really enjoy it and it's probably why I enjoy most Source based games.

But I'm an old fart, so I realize my opinions differ. I was almost 20 when the original Doom came out... so my definition of a good looking game is probably different to all the kiddies. ;)

Out of boredom:

After the leaked vid blunder, I'm very unsure if I'll even touch this before reading what fellow [H]ers have to say about it. I've become a true cynic about BMS & the BMS dev team.

You have to admit, he has quite a lot to lose by trying a free mod. In the time it takes him to try it, he could instead iron a shirt.

That's why you get married. I had a history professor from Kenya tell me that.

Pretty excited about the mod.

It seems that the people whining about the "2004" graphics don't realize that this a mod for a 2004 engine. Disregard the amount of modification/alterting the engine has gone through over the years, no major graphical enhancements have been implemented. How does one expect a mod of HL2 to have today's high quality visuals? How about we change the discussion from, this game looks bad, to, what source titles look better than this?

Hl2 Cinematic Mod.

Yeah, that came out a month (if that) before the release got announced.

What the what?

Cinematic Mod has been in development for years and has had many releases almost a dozen now. Perhaps the latest incarnation was announced last month...but I've had CM10 on my machine for well over a year, and damn it looks good-better than many of the brand new AAA title release of the last year IMHO. Source engine may be old/ancient, but with some 3rd party patching and load it with higher quality models and textures it can look great.

Just because it is Source doesn't mean it has to look like crap.

My mistake.

I'm not saying it looks like crap at all. I was merely trying to make a point. I have not used HLCM before it's latest release. I thought it was a new feature.

Yes, heaven forbid you form your own opinions, right?

I could form my own opinion very quickly, that's for sure. I'm to the point of being emotionally invested in the subject since I've been on both sides of the fence regarding the mod. I'd rather not get in a super pissed off mood if its no good. Waiting to see how it is, before I even decide to download it, will keep me a bit more cheerful around my wife. Maybe I will iron a shirt since that MIGHT BE a lot more productive if BMS is ABSOLUTE SHIT.

That actually sounds about right. :p

The graphics in HL2 were extremely impressive for its time. Facial animations, texture quality, lighting affects and in general a very photo realistic look. Compared to UT2004, Far Cry 2, ect. it was very ahead of its time.

It not only looks worse than source engine games released recently. From the crappy screenshots, it looks worse than every source engine game released ever. As it's a "graphical update" you'd think they get that bit at least semi decent looking. It's just a really lazy looking mod. Like they wanted to make these 2 things from it, but couldn't be assed to do the rest, or anything well, and just rushed to get this finished, then got bored.

If visuals don't matter, play the original. If they do, this will hurt you, badly. :p

Some of the screen shots shown in 2007 looked better than HL2's graphics. It is using a better/newer build of Source compared to HL2 and The Lost Coast.

I'd honestly like someone to show me something that qualifies as 'Today's high quality visuals' and compare it to HL2/source.

holy fucking graphics whores. personally, i'll be playing the mod because of my love for all things half life. more than a "graphics update" i see this as a new spin on my favorite game of all time. fuck the graphics.

i'll have ten times as much fun playing this and reliving 1998 than i would 95% of new games these days. if i wanted crazy graphics to beat off to i'd play a new game.

The facial animation system has still yet to be matched, in my opinion.

Bitch, bitch, bitch. It's a free mod, for Christ's sake.
