Wow, I couldn't tell that the frame was 3D printed until you pointed it out. I was actually considering 3D printing the mounting brackets that attach the components to the panel for the same reasons as you. It's just cheaper and faster to prototype than metal if you don't have the tools...
Thanks for reaching out.
I'm so pleased with the information and measurements in the tech bulletin that I've already updated the thread with a PCI slot measurement chart based on the info provided by Protocase. And judging by the lack of response so far, it may be the only web published paper...
Thanks for your input. Sounds like I need a little work with my google-fu. :ninja:
I found that first link before but failed to find any pci measurements for the slot, mostly connection and interface info. Did I miss something?
I've actually used some of the protocase resources and never came...
I've been scouring the interwebs for PCIE slot measurements with mixed results. There are a few common graphics that pop-up each time this question is asked on various forums, but they are inconsistent and vary quite a bit. If you've ever searched for this measurement you've probably seen them...
Nice. That's quite a haul!
I'm curious though, how is the port secured to the IO panel? I noticed the orange panel has mounting holes for the case, but couldn't make out how you secure the ports to the panel.
Haha, yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes the case will look too simple, like the designer made the easiest design choices, then other times there's an elegance in the simplicity.
Eye of the beholder, I suppose.
Well, I did say that I liked those type of minimalist designs from Lian Li, Jonsbo, etc., so not necessarily sharting on all of their stuff. I added Abee because I thought I discovered them from another thread and wanted to throw another brand into the mix for OP. They're all definitely very...
Haha, not trolling at all. I'm in a few different threads and got mixed up as to where I read what.
I think that's a pretty sensible template for most consumer products. It would be interesting to discuss some of the finer points in regards to something as specific as computer...
Hmm. I lean more towards a simple design aesthetic, and Lian Li, Caselabs, Jonsbo are great examples as sonsonate pointed out. But most of these minimalism designs tend to look too utilitarian or industrial in my opinion, like a rack mount case, which isn't meant to be mostly visible. I'm...
This is so true. It's like trying to choose between father-time's personal computer of yore and whatever abomination forged by an alienware design vet from the 90's. No gracias.
Haha, yep, you get it. :)
That sounds worth checking out as this is exactly the type of project I'm hoping the panel could be built around. Very cool, indeed.
That IS quite the collection.
It's not actually meant to be a bench, but rather, a working panel that can be used/mounted horizontally or vertically. Certainly, it would be a bench if it was used as such, but the intention is to provide more customization than a traditional test-bench.
I...
That's exactly right. The panel would use uniform spacing and utilize brackets/trays that components are mounted to, which are then mounted to the panel. Just as you said, this would allow the user to organize the layout of the components on the panel in any configuration.
Due to the...
Just to clarify, this is still in a design phase, pre-prototype. That's why I created this thread, to see if there was any interest and if so, how better to shape the design. I'd prefer not to share the rudimentary sketchup model at this time, but I definitely understand the need for a visual...
Those Abee cases are seriously superb. I've never heard of them before, how come they aren't sold outside of Japan? Found a couple forum posts on google asking the same question without any real answers.
I'm with you there. Brushed aluminum would look good on the case, and some slight design upgrades as well. That's probably my only complaint with the V21, I researched it pretty heavily before buying, and although it checked all the boxes for functionality that I wanted, it wasn't as polished...
I've seen a few pics of those before but never found the site. Super clean. Curious though who would need a travel-bench? Market seems for a very specific user and use case. Either way, design is through the roof!
+1. That's a great idea to get a better understanding of OP's taste. Is the FT03 a trashcan or a sleek, clean-lined tower? I'm with you DoubleTap, I'm a fan of that design, except for that damn Silverstone logo! Silverstone has some pretty cases for sure, but their over-branding kills it for me...
I totally agree. There are few cases that check all the boxes for me too, so I'm looking to prototype a design I've been throwing around for some time now. What do you think about an open-air case, a la Thermaltake Core P5, but with more customization flexibility? Looks would have less to do...
Very cool. I've always been a fan of using wood in case building. The clean line look is strong with this one, which has me looking forward to proto 3 even more now. Curious, how much weight do you think the 3d-printed ssd bracket can handle?
After searching for an open-air pc case, and only finding a few offerings (from Thermaltake, Lian-Li, Feros, InWin), then researching fully DIY build projects, I was inspired to design something on my own. I wanted something that had the quality and polish of the branded cases, with a more...
