If you are still tooling around with a gas trimmer, do yourself, and your neighbors a favor and pick up one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WG190-48-Volt-Lithium-Cordless-Grass-Trimmer-and-Edger-by-Worx-/281415673122

Super hot, battery alone is over $100.

Compared to a gas trimmer:
-lighter
-quieter
-easier to use (no starting, jacking around with oil, fuel, etc)
-no toxic fumes
-just as useful (this unit should be pretty powerful)
-cheaper to operate

How to make the battery last 10+ years:
-Don't store the battery dead. Charge it after use.
-Don't store the battery at 100%. Try to pull it out of the charger before 100% or finish your yard work before the battery is at 0% and store it like that.
-Store the battery at cool temperature. Never outdoors heat. (bonus: refrigerator)
-Try not to run the battery to complete 0% shut off. This is not really a big deal if you need to use the full capacity... but if you do, make sure to charge it up.

Basically you try to store the battery at like 30%-70% charge. 30 min before you need to use it, pop it in the charger to top it off and go.

Even if you don't follow the above, it should last 5+ years if you at least 1.) don't store it dead at 0% charge, and 2.) keep it stored indoors in the A/C.

I've been eyeballing an electric for my next trimmer after the carb on my 4 stroke one finally gave up the paper after 5 years. Got too many attachments to consider that worx one posted but still thx for the link. Hopefully can snag one of the Ryobi ones on a sale before next season starts up.

The deal seems to be dead, but thank you for the heads up and advice.

Here's the Worx Ebay store, they seem to have other hot related deals: http://stores.ebay.com/Worx-Lawn-and-Garden-Equipment/_i.html?_sid=608105457&_sop=2

EDIT: crap it is dead. I was reading it wrong. Sorry.

I got 4 of them. 2 at $80, 2 at $70. Great gifts.
I already have a 36V string trimmer that I payed $140 for that uses 0.060 line and has a ~50W-Hr battery. And it's super powerful. (B&D)
This one is 48V with a 90 W-Hr battery and 0.080 line. Should be no joke.

I would think about trying this. I have a stihl, people say they are good, utter garbage I whip about 1 / month and edge 2x per year. The thing has never lasted more than 2 years without needing service. Every time I take it in it cost $80 or more to service.

Starting it sucks, really sucks. Maybe I should give electric another try.

I don't use any gas on any of my yard work. I use my b&d 36v trimmer and a push manual mower. I have the hardest grass/lawn for a push mower too... st augestine and a serious pine tree problem (like 20 pine trees, dropping shit all over the place)

The only gas tool is my blower, nothing else good enough for getting the sheet of pine needles from the roof/gutters. Once per quarter
The trimmer was $140, the mower $80. 20 months so far both going strong. No maintenance except I adjust the blades 1 per year on the mower and spray the blades with wd-40 to keep rust away.

Hoping to get a deal on this somewhere or just the power head version then use all the attachments I've been collecting

Actually that one looks quite nice. Dual line, and up to 15" cut. head...)
The worx is only 13" and single line. (though you can just remove the guard...)
I like dual line because of less vibration, but more shit to brake and more advancement problems.

Worx battery would prob last longer. What is the Wh-Hr on the Ryobi?

Edit: looks like they have two 40v batteries:

I am sure the tools come with the smaller cheaper one. The bigger one is 2.4 Ah-Hr, making approximately equal to the Worx 48V battery which is 2.0Ah-Hr
