Why does Turok's save feature suck so bad.

I mean I'm torn because on one hand I like the story, but on the other hand when I die, I have to repeat the same levels over and over and it pisses me off. Is the autosave supposed to be the only real way to save this game? Whenever I save through the save menu, it doesn't feel like it's actually doing anything at all.
