Why did people start using 1280x1024 instead of 1280x960?

I'm curious as to what made people decide to abandon the 4/3 ratio for this resolution.

640x480 = 4:3
800x600 = 4:3
1024x768 = 4:3
1280x960 = 4:3; but almost never used
1280x1024 = 5:4
1400x1050 = 4:3
1600x1200 = 4:3
1920x1440 = 4:3
2048x1536 = 4:3

so what's the reason for this bastard resolution?

I think some people just like having a slightly higher resolution. It gives you more room without shrinking the text down to much more, almost a compromise instead of jumping to the next resolution. That and for some reason a lot of cards in the past didnt support 1280x960. Don't ask me why, but I know some of my old vid cards didnt have that option.

who are the "people" -- you and me, or the manufacturers?

i have no idea what made them switch... but most 17" LCDs have a 5:4 screen size, so running a 4:3 resolution wouldn't look right. same thing with 19" CRTs. I've tried 1280x960, but it doesn't completely fill the screen. I use 1280x1024 because that's what "fits" -- and what Mitsubishi recommends.

the thing is; 1280x1024 was out before the LCDs...and that's the only non-widescreen resolution that isn't 4:3...

that 5:4 ratio is why I won't buy any 17, 18, or 19" LCDs.

if people wanted a better resolution, they could have used the 1400x1024 or 1600x1200...why institute the 5:4 instead though?

the closest guess I could make probably deals with something like the windows start bar(leaving the remaining screen at 4:3); but that's stupid, otherwise they'd have made 640x512, 800x640, 1024x820, 1400*1120, 1600x1280, 2048x1638 as well...

I suspect it was a decision by the LCD manufactures (not withstanding the fact that it was a standard resolution before LCD's) for the 17"-19" sized LCD's in order to provide a more substantial increase in pixels over 15" LCD's

But my 172X's can scale 1280X960 just fine... my biggest beef is that not all games support that resolution.

I just hope that all 4:3 res's get dropped eventually and we only use 16X10 resolutions...it much more pleasing to the eye.

Check it. Any pic that I display on the screen at any resolution but 1280x1024 looks perfectly fine. Once I resolution at 1280x1024, the pic looks distorted (either too stretched or too squashed). I've never used 1280x1024.

I went from:

1024x768 > 1152x864 (or something like that) > 1280x960 > 1600x1200. I'm loving the 1600x1200, but the only thing is that the text is too small on most websites, even though I raise the DPI. Windows says that this issue will be corrected in the next major Windows release. :rolleyes:

^ This doesn't help much. It only works on sites that have some type of configuration (Unicode or something?) which allows Windows to resize the text. It does NOT resize the graphics/photos on a page, and a lot of sites I read CANNOT adjust the text settings.

I surf the web quite a bit myself. I actually like the size of text on my 2001fp. I don't even increase the DPI settings or anything. I think the text size is just about perfect.

Maybe its a reason similar to the apple cinema display resoloution (1920x1280), allows you do do widescreen 1080i fullscreen video editing, while leaving some room at the top or bottom for some buttons. I never cared, always getting 1600x1200 displays or better :p

I prefer 1280*1024 over 1280*960, since it is the highest resolution on my crappy 19" CRT where text is still readable and not fuzzy. For gaming, 3:4 is the way to go, but for the desktop, I'll take as much extra space as I can get. My next monitor will most definitely be a larger 1600x1200 monitor, probably the Dell 2001fp or Samsung 213T, depending how patient I am in saving up for the monitor.

cuz 1280x1024 is the native resolution with my vp171b, i run all my games in that resolution except Generals which only supports highest 1280x960

When I do serious music listening, I sit exactly 5' back from the screen. I don't adjust the text size, and I can still read it. Granted it's not the easiest thing, but at 3' and closer you'll be fine. Heck, you can always set it up for larger fonts if you still have a problem.

I have to run that resolution on cs 1.5 cuase that the highest it goes I want it to run in 1280x1024 cuase I got a vp171b for its native resolution so I dont get this
