Check the stats:

or
http://ark.intel.com/products/28028...essor-QX6700-(8M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB)

Both have identical stats and I'm looking at putting one of them into this board:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2617#sp
...with 8GB Corsair @800Mhz 4-4-4-12

I assume that the Xeon should work (and is slightly cheaper), since it's LGA775, 1066FSB, Doesn't care about non-ECC, etc.

Current chip is a C2D E6600, and is pretty dated.

Recently got a few SSD's and am loving it, but need something else to give me that little umph from this aging machine.

If anyone else has CPU suggestions, i'd love to hear them. Must be LGA775 and 1066FSB (per the mobo).

Sell your current gear, pick up a 2500K, profit. LGA 775 is dead, and has been dead. Any money spent on the socket is money poorly spent.

LOL! i know, i know, i know.....
Only wanna spend ~$100 right now. (maybe ~20-30 back on E6600 on eBay).

I would go for the cheaper chip or a Q6600 which can usually be found for $80 to $85 used. Sell your chip for $30 and its a $50 to $55 upgrade. I wouldn't really spend much more then that. If you can find a cheap q9300 or q9400 I would take one of those over the q6xx series. I know you said 1066 fsb but the q9xx series is listed in the cpu support list.

Thanks for your input. Considering your suggestion.
My motherboard only supports a max 1066 FSB max. The chips you reccommend (q9300 or q9400, etc.) are 1333FSB. Bummer. If I could use a 1333FSB chip, I'd go QX9700 or above. ;)

They are listed in the cpu support list for your motherboard though. But honestly spending over $100 upgrading 775 is not a good idea. The price for anything above q9400 escalates quickly and the bang for the buck over a new combo (or even a used 1366 or 1156 combo) becomes horrible.

Right; yeah, they list C2Extreme, however, the only ones available when this was written were 1066 FSB. :/ Meh.

Absolutely, I will NOT spend over $100 on this configuration. Not a chance in hell. Just looking to MAX the current rig and hope it lasts me a bit longer.

They're listed all right but there's a "N/A" next to those CPUs. Which means that those CPUs won't work with the OP's motherboard. Thats assuming that the link the OP provided is correct.

However, I do agree that the OP shouldn't be spending money on such an old platform. With that said, Burn23, if you're still insistent on a CPU upgrade, don't spend more than $80 to $85 on a socket 775 CPU upgrade. It's ridiculously not worth spending that extra $15 to $20. So your best bet would probably be the Q6600. Still a poor expenditure of money at $80 but not a piss-poor expenditure of money like $100.

Oh ok I see it now. What a crappy, lazy way to have a cpu support list displayed. My bad. Yeah OP's best bet would be if he has a microcenter near by and try to get in on an i3 2100 with a free or discounted mobo at $100 to $120. Don't know if they currently have that deal running but I've seen it in the past. My personal favorite as a budget gaming upgrade is to get an i3 5xx for $75 to $80 and a used lga 1156 board off ebay for $50 to $60 and overclock that sucker to 4.3 to 4.5 ghz.

Lots of people are trying desperately to hang on to their 775 systems but it doesn't really make sense if they would just do the math.

In this case the OP wants to hang onto the mobo and RAM and just upgrade the cpu.
The cpu could be sold for about $30, lets say the mobo sells for only $20, but that DDR2 is worth a lot.
If you check ebay people want about $40 for 2x2GB kits. If the OP has two of the 2x2GB kits, split that up and sell them separately. Let's say those sell for $75 total, which may be low, but I want to be realistic. That is $125, and the OP wants to spend another maybe $70 net after the sale of his cpu for an upgrade. That would essentially mean he has $195 tied up in his 775 system.
I hope my logic makes sense.

At newegg you can get an i3 2100 for $125, an gigabyte H61 board for $61, and 8 GB Patriot DDR3 for about $36. That is $222 and those are shipped prices.

222-195 is just $27 difference. Also, then keep in mind that an i3 2100 is faster than a Q6600 at stock, and in this case the OP's board only supports 1066 so he can't overclock the Q6600 anyway.

So obviously I think it would be worth it to sell everything and move to Sandy Bridge, or just wait a bit more to see what happen with Ivy Bridge.

Your prices are based on actually getting that ( users lowball and want free shipping)

If the OP wants to upgrade, here is some suggestions.

Q6600 for under 80 on ebay. buy it now listing
Q6700 for under 85 on ebay - buy it now listing

X3230 for $60 (auction) with 1 day left
X3220 for around $50
