Im looking to buy the MSI 5700 non Ultra but Im curious what the main differences are between the Ultra and non ultra. Are both cards the nv36?

the ultra is slightly fast than the non ultra and its fan is a lot quieter than the non ultra too

The difference is pretty huge:
Code:
              FX5700-VTD128 / 5700 Ultra
memory speed: 400MHz 950MHz
core speed: 425MHz 475MHz
memory type:	DDR I DDR II
Otherwise, both have the same features since both use the NV36 core.

Spend the extra $30 and get the 5900SE, I went from a 5700 to the 5900SE and the performance difference is HUGE. Worth every penny of the difference, and you get a full copy of CoD too boot. The 5700 takes a huge hit with AA/AF on.

im almost positive they don't mean 400mhz effective im going to say its 800mhz as a difference of 550 on the same line is pretty insane.

No, it's DDR1 200MHz memory, 400MHz effective. There is a HUGE difference in performance between the 2 cards.

Don't forget that the lowest 5200 has a 64-bit memory interface @ 200MHz DDR (400MHz effective) vs the 5200 Ultra with a 128-bit memory interface at 325MHz DDR (650MHz effective). That's even a bigger difference (3.2GB/s vs 10.4GB/s) than the 2 5700 models (6.4GB/s vs 14.4GB/s <- mistake above should have been 900MHz for the 5700 ultra memory).

If you still don't believe it, go to MSI's web site and look at the card. Those type of memory chips aren't even made at 400MHz DDR (800MHz effective), the maximum I've seen is 325MHz DDR (650MHz) in that package. http://www.msi.com.tw/images/product_img/vga_img/8948.jpg
