What's s939 doing with all those pins?

Funny question came to mind today while (irrationally) considering building a budget s754 gaming system.

Similar s754 and s939 cpus will give similar performance in almost all situations. So that begs the question: what are those extra 185 pins for?

My only thought is that they could be the interface w/the second channel of memory for DC....

And while I'm writing this, I'll just throw out the question: would you build a budget (prolly Sempron64 based) system to upgrade over the 3.0c in my sig?

the extra 185 pins are for the 2nd channel of ram. 184 pins are needed to talk with the 184 pins on the ram.

holy crap it all makes sense now!

/not sarcastic

sempron 64's can do like 2.7ghz stable. barons did. it was impressive. also, check out a64 2800+'s. they do 2.5ghz usually, and the 512k cache makes up for the slower clock speeds then those of sempron 64's.

i dunno what that other 1 pin is for though. its probably just for like chillaxin. maybe voltage though. not sure

Probably either an extra ground or a parity bit.

That's what got my attention. I was actually spec'ing out a HTPC for a friend, and saw how cheap Sempron 64's are, and how well they o/c, and started thinking about how my 3.0c kinda sucks for gaming these days. The 2800+ A64 also sounds nice because of the added L2. Are there any particular revisions to look for in s754 2800s?

When I did the math to see that there are 185 extra pins, I *thought* that sounded similar to what the DDR interface is, but I couldn't remember.

no revisions to look for when buying a s754 2800+, they all do about the same, unlike its unpredictable brother s939, where steppings and weeks make such a big difference.

If you aren't going to put it in a DFI board, I'd recommend the 3100+. It has a 9x multi and 256kb cache.
