Just bought a Lite On 812s. I'm new to DVD burning and would like a little advice on what media to use +RW or -RW. Does it matter? Also I would like to back up my DVD collection( that's right,. the movies I bought and paid for.) My children are destroying them. But I'm not sure about compression. any advice would be appreciated.

For backing up movies the -R/RW generally has better compatibility with stand alone DVD players, but you should check with the manufacturer to see. Some that are made by a company who supports the DVD+R format (like Phillips) make theres to play only that format. http://www.videohelp.com/ has a lot of info that will help you choose.

Aha, but +RW can be bitset to -ROM, which essentially means that -R/RW and +R/RW will be nearly the same, compatibility wise. Your 812S can do +RW and -RW at 4X, so just go for whichever is cheaper.
