I just installed Vista Premium on my machine on a clean hd. Everything works great but sometimes when I install a program the screen goes black instead of just fadeing and to get it back i have to restart my computer. I tried a different video card but that didnt help any. The weird thing is it only happens sometime. Anyone have any ideas?

Abit av8 mobo
amd x2 4200 not overclocked
ati 2400hd pro vid card
1.5 gigs of kingston ram
maxtor 120 gig hd
800watt antec power supply

Its hard to know a direction to troubleshoot so I'm gonna have to ask some basic questions.
Have you noticed anything else odd with your PC?
Check the event log to see if anything odd is showing up.
Have you installed the latest drivers for everything including motherboard?
Have you tried using a different monitor?

Can you tell us the idle and load temps of the chipset, CPU and GPU?
Check inside the case to see if anything feels a bit too warm.

What kind of time-span are we talking about here? The screen just goes black for 5, 10, 45 seconds or minutes?

There are some programs, when installing or running, that make UAC take forever to take and display the screencap(that's all the background of the UAC prompt is, a screenshot of your static desktop) and initialize.

Save for that, maybe some more specific info, like:

Drivers?
Firmware?
Service Pack?
etc..
