Very Quick Q

nope, you can use 2 ethernet cards and a cross-over cable to build a 2 computer network. or you can use a cheap ethernet hub or switch.
 
Can do it with a switch or a hub.

Can probably do it better in the networking forum ;)
 
Doh I just realized I clicked the wrong forum. well does anyone know why, I cant connect to my network with a laptop. I have a router and the wireless connection is fine between the two.
 
Firewall, most likely. Make sure that the wireless & wired systems are on the same subnet or change the firewall rules to allow the other subnet.

Also, the router might have some feature to disable the communication between wired and wired (either completely or partially). Make sure that's disabled.
