using a sata drive as an external hdd?

you can buy an external sata enclosure that actually uses sata, even if your motherboard doesn't have an external sata controller.

they sometimes include a pci cover slot that has an external sata connector on it, just like the motherboard rear i/o panel. it then has a regular sata cable that plugs into your controller, and you're set (and faster than any usb, most likely).

If you need, could use or want the portability offered by an external HDD, sure. That is basically the only pro. If you dont, it seems like a waste of money and performance to me.
