Upscaler for Linux is awesome

Interesting, curious of the algo used to basically "fill in the blanks" in order to upscale the image, with out using LLMs or something internet connected...

May have to give this a try. Lots of old pictures taken on cheap 35mm cameras that could definitely use some touchup. It's available as a port for FreeBSD, though currently at a slightly older version (1.1.2). It doesn't look like it would be too hard to manually install or update the existing port to current. Too bad I can't find a changelog to know what's been done between 1.1.2 and 1.2.2.

If you are into this sort of thing it is worth learning some basic GIMP and then plundering the web for different upscale plugins for it.

I hate Gimp with a preoccupying kind of hate.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up. Upscaler 1.2.2 is in the Mint repos, big package though.
I'll return with some results later.

Edit:
Seems best for logos/text (Lincoln Osiris meme)
similar to earlier tech for low-quality, artifacted pics (filthy casual meme)
Good with regular non-artifacted photos of stuff (planes)

Crashed when given a straight-up wall of text (oh well)

Spits out PNG (it would be nice if it outputted jpg alongside) and pre-decides the output size (fair enough).

Gimp takes some getting used to but since Photoshop went subscription only, what other alternatives are there?

Yeah, we're in a crappy position courtesy of Adobe.

I guess - to be fair, Gimp has a workflow, it's mostly stable (as in, it doesn't crash for me), and I'm sure I could master it if I really needed to. It's merely a subjective opinion of mine.
Also, it's been a while since I did a comparison of available projects.

As far as this tool goes, I'll leave it installed. It's one of those things that will probably show its true capabilities on a case-by-case basis.

I have good results and a nice workflow with GIMP. Couldn't quite grog Photoshop when I tried it.

I think picture editing is heavily dependent on muscle memory. Whatever you learn first probably has a huge advantage.

paint.net (for Windows) works quite well for photo editing w/o too much deep knowledge of Photoshop.

GIMP is probably the best bet for Linux (though there's good alternatives).
