This is going into my old CoolerMaster Wavemaster (yellow) w/ Enermax 431w p/s with panaflo fans.

A little more than I wanted to spend, but considering how much I upgrade these days it's not too bad.

Why did you get the Thermaltake 250w PSU? I used to run my PC with a OCZ 520w just fine...

It's not the Watts you have to look at, it's the amps. Newer cards like the juice (amps) more so than previous generations of cards.

btw: How do you like your Samsung 22" WS?

I'm old, forgive me.

:D

A friend pointed me to a website to calculate Watts needed for the amount of stuff I'll have on it. The link had more than my 431 can provide, roughly... so I picked this up to take the load off. I was told amps were important on some of the newer cards.

??

That PSU was a bad idea. Not only is it not necessary, but I'd trust my video card to my main PSU more than I would to that.

Other than that, I'd say it wasn't the greatest idea to pick up a Q6600 with the 45nm stuff just down the road, but still, not a bad chip.

And, as a lesser point, I'd have gone with Samsung for hard drives.

Have to agree with the others on the power supply. I would have gone more for an Antec Trio 430 or 550. I do feel that the power supply should be the highest quality one you can afford and one of the most important areas not to skimp on when designing a system.

(I know my PS in my sig is overkill for the rig now, but at the time, I bought into the hype that some people put out about 1kW being future proof, and in reality, the 550SLI PCP&C that I traded in for the 1KW would still be running fine in my current system at a third of the cost :( You live and learn I guess.)

Yeh, well the 431 could struggle slightly if it is old with that new rig but you will be fine with the 250w Video PSU.

Of all the rails 12v is the one you should use, as the load on the 5v and 3.3v is minimal.

Besides, Watt calculators at best are sub-par along with Amp calculatiors.

I'm guessing your 430W Enermax is rather old. If so, you actually should have just bought a brand new PSU instead of the vidcard PSU. Which model Enermax is that? If its the one I'm thinking about, then it only has 20A on the +12V rail -- and you're right, thats not enough for the card you bought. However, since your enermax PSU is old, it probably only has a 20-pin connector; and the price of the 250W Tt was so high, you could have gotten an XClio Goodpower 500W or XClio Stablepower 460W instead -- each with more than enough juice to power your planned rig.

Everything else looks great! :p

If you want, you can still return the 250W. Just talk to newegg and return it for a refund. Then, have someone waive the restocking fee once you order a new PSU.

Go for an Enhance if you want ~$50-60. It's worth doing 2 orders IMO (since eWiz sells them). Or just order everything from eWiz.
