In addition to the lack of cross-play in Fallout 76, Todd Howard revealed in his interview with German PC magazine GameStar that Fallout 5 would be a single-player experience, just like previous installments. This may be a hint of Bethesda’s strategy going forward, in that multi-player experiences will be relegated to spin-offs, such as The Elder Scrolls Online.
Todd Howard said Bethesda will be focusing on single-player games because it would be better for them to keep the multi-player and single-player aspects separate, hence Fallout 76 being a multiplayer only game even with its solo option (which allows you to play outside a group, but not without anyone else around you).
