So this seems like an incredibly obvious question but I'm still searching the answer:

On the TIM pads, one side is brown and the other is Blue. Usually the Blue side is protected by a piece of wax paper or plastic sheet

Anyone know if there is any preference as to which side contacts the heatsink and which contacts the chip?

Also - the brown side does not peel away, correct?

Avoid them like the plague - always use paste. Period.

With that said, which side is up is going to vary by your material but most TIM's I've seen (and removed) were stuck to the bottom of the heatsink, not the CPU - so it stands to reason that the side that peels off should go on the bottom of the heatsink with most materials.

Thanks guys - i figured that but wasn't 100% certain. At least we have it in a thread now :)

Orinthical - i agree with you when it comes to components like the CPU or GPU - but with components where contact isn't always as even and temps aren't as critical- such as MOSFETs - a TIM pad should be sufficient enough to get proper contact and cooling.
