Back in August, Elon Musk announced that he wanted Tesla to go private on Twitter. But after detailing the funding plan, it never materialized, which made quite a few investors unhappy. Now, Bloomberg reports that the Justice Department is conducting a criminal investigation into Tesla over Musk's public statements. Apparently Tesla's board wasn't even on board with the proposal, which fell through after just three weeks. The SEC was already investigating Tesla before Musk's early August tweets, and Bloomberg seems to think the investigation will open a "Pandora's Box" of other potential violations now that an investigation is underway.
"Last month, following Elon's announcement that he was considering taking the company private, Tesla received a voluntary request for documents from the DOJ and has been cooperative in responding to it," the company said in a statement released Tuesday following Bloomberg’s report of the investigation. "We have not received a subpoena, a request for testimony, or any other formal process. We respect the DOJ’s desire to get information about this and believe that the matter should be quickly resolved as they review the information they have received."
