not sure where to put this... but when i try to do a windows update, i goto the site and hit scan for updates and receive this message:

"Windows update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepancy in your computers time setting.

To check your date and time setting:
1. On the taskbar, double click the time.
2. Verify that the date and time is correct."

i have no idea whats causing this, my time is obviously correct unless it has to be correct to the very second? in which i probably couldnt get it universal to the second anyways

so im stuck without sp1 and dx9  help

have you disables services to increase XP performance? make sure RPC service is running.

It is the Remote Procedure Call service, check services to see if it is running.

It is also required for internet time update to work, so if that works ok then that is not the problem.

Remote Procedure Call is running in services, but right under it Remote Prodcedure Call locator isnt

I doubt that would matter.

It is a strange problem!
you do not happen to have FCKGW serial number do you.

Take a look at the Windows Update log file, typically in %WINDIR%\Windows Update.log. In that log file might be the actual error message to why windowsupdate isn't working.
