i have a full legit version of xp. am i going to have pay a full price for if i want to move to vista? or will it be a discounted rate? how is vista gonna work for students? like if it's just 50 bucks to move from XP to vista then i might consider it.

There's upgrade editions of vista available if you have a valid XP (or possibly Win2k) license/disc.
Student pricing will depend on your educational institution, which will have to negotiate with MS. I'm not even going to guess how long that process will take and what the final price will be, but I imagine it'd be similar to the prices of current XP (excluding vista ultimate edition.)
