slow wired net through router on new computer build

I Have a WRT54GL router that's been good to me for many years without issue. I just built a new windows 7 desktop and now my wired connection is at 2-5mbps through router. I've tried everything I've come accross searching so far with no luck.
Anybody have any ideas? I use my wireless with my phone or Id just dump the router. I have 40-50mbps straight from modem to desktop so it should be faster.
 
lol never mind. tried one last thing and got lucky. posted question as it was booting up and it actually worked. WOOT!

It would actually be more beneficial for you to post the solution, in case someone else has the same / similar issue later.
 
Factory reset button on unit worked after factory reset in setup and firmware update had no change.
 
You wont get 40-50mbit out of this router (from WAN) reliably even using a wired connection.

Speed test showed 36mbps. More than fast enough for me. I don't download movies or music anymore.
