A few years ago, I purchased a cpu cooler for a 939 processor, but have never used it, I notice that there are several coolers that support 939 up to AM3, So that got me to thinking I can use that cooler on my new AM3 cpu, but then i notice that the bottom of the old cooler does not cover the entire surface of my 1100t.

I am still fairly new to messing around with this type of stuff, I was wondering if it is wise to use a cooler who's base is smaller than the surface of the cpu

If it mounts correctly and with adequate pressure it will work. The cores are not on the edges of your heatspreader anyway. You will lose some thermal transfer surface area though so I would recommend getting a proper heatsink for anything permanent.

The main change I found was the HS mounting lugs for AM3 are on the different side of the cpu block. So a 939 cooler that blew air to the back of the case will now blow it up into the case at the PSU on a AM3 board.
