Conclusion

The Silverstone SST-LC02 looked very promising to begin with. It had a sleek and stylish design, low price, and utilized standard ATX motherboards. While the LC02 is a nice case, it’s hard to recommend for those building an HTPC. Sure the ability to support full size ATX motherboards is nice, but the heat problems make it unattractive for the majority of the people. Now if the heat was only caused by the components, I wouldn’t have any problems recommending the case for use with EPIA’s or simple IGP9100 based HTPC’s, but the heat problems stem from hard drive cooling.

At a price of $140, the LC02 is relatively cheap for the type of case it is. While you can pickup cases such as the Antec Overture for $105, the two cases don’t quite target the same market. The LC02 is targeted to those looking for an HTPC device that will blend in with other home theater components, while the Overture is aimed to be an HTPC case that’ll fit on the rack. Ahanix produces cases that appeal to the same market, but they cost $200+ and are slightly bigger. This puts the LC02 in its own little niche due to size and styling.

Nonetheless, it’s still very hard to be able to recommend the LC02 to those wanting to simply build a stylish HTPC, as HTPC’s tend to have large hard drives for PVR features, and large hard drives tend to get warmer. For those that like to mod, the LC02 is a perfect little case to tinker around with till you’ve hacked up enough of it off to keep the hard drive cool. The LC02 also does deserve some recognition for being able to fit a Zalman CNPS7000A Cu in such a small design.
