SETI.Germany's 14th Annual Pentathlon (2023)

As an outsider, its text that can be taken different ways depending on who is reading it along with their current mood. Plus, there is that translation thingy that comes into play sometimes.

And yeah the renting of servers, using a companies "pending" builds for testing purposes (or whatever else you want to call it), specialised secret software (looking at you Krunchie), etc. has taken the fun out of these competitions of the past years for many. Using stuff that you own/bought/built yourself is the fun part...well used to be.

Yeah 100% bonus day! Contribute 1M and get 1M back. Good deal. Crunch it away!

100% bonus day for Obstacle was announced and is currently on. Servers are getting hit hard so upload your bunkers as soon as you can (try)

I'm not seeing any issues uploading the small bunkers I have. The problem I'm having is even though I have it set to get no new work, YoYo is sending me new work on clients I don't want work on.

I currently have 329 tasks pending for Einstein. My little 4070 is just cranking them out like crazy. Just in time for outdoor temps to get near 100 F.

Oh, joy. YoYo also aborted every single work unit I was currently crunching on my main system as well as some currently running on my server. That pisses me off to no end.

Did you run multiple instances on the same rig? There is something that you need to do first before doing this on Yoyo.

Trying to keep the right WU's now. Having a hard time loading up enough.

you sure it aborted them? when your system gets really laggy sometimes the tasks don't show (happens to me sometimes) have to toggle a few times between show all tasks / show active
mind you this mostly happens when i have 15 boinc clients open at once :D

If it did abort them there could have been an issue with a batch of tasks or perhaps you were past deadline?

Yes, the status on each of them that it happened to was "Aborted by Server". On the clients this happened to it did it to every work unit which wasn't finished processing. All work units I had were before deadline and most of the ones aborted were at least four days before deadline.

Hmm, are we chasing after LTT for the bronze medal in obstacle (yoyo) 🤔

Whatever it is, please keep those cpus hot....

Yes, I had multiple instances on the same machines but I had never run into this issue previously. All the clients had their own data directories and I've never had this problem before. There were multiple instances of YoYo when I had done dumps on the other bonus days and this didn't happen. I've even had two clients running YoYo simultaneously when finishing one bunker and starting another.

your results say client detached https://www.rechenkraft.net/yoyo//result.php?resultid=98999553
That is usually related to problems with multiple instances in some way. Not sure why it would have happened exactly but that sucks.

Jeeper's Day 13 BOINC Pentathlon commentary

Less than 1.5 days to the finishing line.

We dropped one spot in obstacle (yoyo) :(

Day 13 – 17 May 2023 – Let Us Get to the Bacon!

We are in the final hours of the 14th BOINC Pentathlon and this means for the teams that they have to give their all on the last meters. Until tomorrow there is not too much left to accomplish changes. Two disciplines with different profiles are still running. For some teams this offers chances to shine.

icon-crosscountry-small.png Cross Country (Einstein@Home)
TAAT continue to hold the top spot. However, GPUUG keep them under pressure, but this is not yet enough to catch up. In contrast, P3D seem to have secured bronze, as [H] (#4) seems too far behind.

And even farther behind, the medal ship has sailed for LTT (#5), TC (#6), and SG (#7). SG have fought their way past CNT (#8), but they are just too slow. Ukraine (#9) are slowly pulling away from RKN (#10), who in turn manage to keep AF (#11) at bay.

OCN cannot be sure of #12 yet, as SUSA (#13) are catching up rapidly. It remains to be seen whether the Americans can close the gap. They left EVGA behind, who at least managed to pass B@P (#15) and LITOMYSL (#16).

In all this turmoil, BOINC.Italy (#17) are doing their rounds and try to catch LITOMYSL. In doing so, the Italians have to watch out for MK (#18), who made up a lot of ground in the last hours. The victims of this attack were Chinese Dream (#19), TSBT (#20), AMD Users (#21), 2ch (#22), and B^S (#23).

Behind them, BOINCstats (#24) are lying in wait. They have an eye on B^S, but have to keep up their current pace until the end. Crystal Dream are in #25 and lost contact. Russia (#26) might still threaten them from behind, as they are faster.

TFFE have just claimed #27 and pushed UBT down into #28. Let us see if the British fight back. Behind them, BC (#29) and PiGyS (#30) round off the field.

ringe.png Overall Standings
In the overall standings, it is still TAAT ahead of P3D and LTT. While gold and silver seem to be decided, the battle for bronze is a bit closer. Theoretically, SG (#4) still have the chance to push LTT away from bronze, but would have to catch up significantly in the running disciplines and eben catch LTT. This is called a challenge.

[H] appear relatively safe in #5, in part because GPUUG (#6), RKN (#7), and CNT (#8) have little room to improve. But at least the three are separated by only 5 points, this promises an exciting finish. AF are settled in #9, followed by Ukraine (#10). However, SUSA are not too far behind allerdings and thus have at least a theoretical chance to reach the top 10.

The eagles can console themselves by keeping TC (#12) behind them, and maybe MK (#13) can also annoy the dragons a bit. BOINC.Italy are not yet safe in #14, OCN (#15) are only 4 points behind. However, the friends of pasta can still collect points in both disciplines and secure their ranking.

EVGA (#16) maintain their lead over LITOMYSL (#17), who have passed AMD Users (#18). Behind them is already a large gap. This makes clear that B@P will not get better than #19. And even this is not certain, as Crystal Dream (#20) and TSBT (#21) still have chances.

Chinese Dream and TFFE (#23) will probably fight for #22. It remains to be seen whether Russia (#24) will be able to join them. For them, it could also come down to a fight with BC (#25).

While 2ch are probably safe in #26, it is even tighter than skintight between UBT (#27), B^S (#28), and BOINCstats (#29). Currently, only one single point separates the trio, and this promises us an exciting final phase. PiGyS in #30 round off the field.

It is all set. An exciting final phase is ahead of us.

  • Can SG still achieve what seems impossible?
  • Does GPUUG still have the energy for an attack in the Cross Country?
  • Will P3D keep up at the obstacle?

You see it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

I have been having a ton of problems with yoyo WUs just stopping, they stop at even numbers (20%, 40%, 60% etc) and just sit there doing nothing, CPU idle, been aborting them after a while but this is getting frustrating

Those checkpoints are frustrating. Do they have a large amount of time for the estimated time remaining?

I've seen some come through that are estimating 9 days while others on the same machine are 2 hours. Hard to keep the shorter units in stock across multiple machines. So, a 6-9 day WU I'd assume would be stuck at a checkpoint for hours if not days.

I've over 100K credits pending validation in yoyo.

Since the start of the 100% bonus day (at 00:00 UTC) , the validator has been working overdrive and now towards the last few hours of the bonus day race, it is still high.

A lot of people are dropping their bunkers and the server is not able to clear them up quickly. We can only hope that things will be better at the end of the bonus day.

I am at a loss on how they had a yoyo bunker. yoyo only gives me enough tasks to fill my cores/threads and that's it. Then some of those RU units are 3+ days. Being able to bunker yoyo seems pretty impressive to me. Good job to them

The que is increasing for sure. Any idea how many validations are processing per hour?
Another hour later, 10.6K pending. Hopefully it will go down from here on. The server has do do like 3.6K validation per hour to clear the current pendings, assuming no more submission.

well they are stuck long enough that they are past their deadline by days, so now i just abort them

also anyone having trouble with E@H and reporting? I have like three dozen WUs that are just stuck at Ready to report?

Those are flowing fine for me. Did you adjust your upload data rate to limit sending other units?

I have nothing checked in the network tab, these machines are only doing E@H GPU tasks

I wouldn't worry about work units showing ready to report in the status as long as they aren't sitting in the Transfers tab and not uploading. Work units will often show in the Tasks tab as Ready to report even when they've been uploaded. Sometimes it takes a while for the server to send confirmation that they have been received so they're removed from the tasks tab.

This is why you don't want to wait until the last minute to drop bunkers and why I had attempted to drop mine within a half hour of the bonus being announced. It's also why I dropped the E@H bunkers last night. Sure, there was no real reason to bunker it but I felt like it. E@H's servers were a shitshow last year so I would highly recommend anyone who has been bunkering it to drop them ASAP. Trying to hold a bunker until the last minute can come back to bite you in the ass if the servers can't handle a really heavy load.
