I've been reading about SATA port multipliers - they basically take a single SATA port and allow multiple drives to be connected to it. Considering that no single physical spinning drive can currently come close to saturating a 3Gbit/sec link, port multipliers seem to make a lot of sense to me.

My question is - do common chipsets that provide SATA II ports (intel i965 / Nvidia 650/680i) support port multipliers? From what I can read, port multipliers only work if the SATA controller supports port multipliers.

Of course there doesn't seem to be any compatibility information anywhere, other than for add-in cards, some of which specifically mention port multiplier capability.

Here's a link to a 5 to 1 port multiplier: http://fire-wire-1394-ilink.stores.yahoo.net/saiipomupcbf.html
Here's another one, including a link to the SATA org's page on port multipliers: http://himself.wordpress.com/2006/0...s-device-is-to-ncq-sata-approaches-sas-power/
