I'm trying to fix a pc for a friend (older pc, athlon xp 2300+, ide 40gb drive). He said it was working fine and it quit on him. He brought it over and we put a new power supply in, somehow his got fried. Now whenever we boot up the machine we get a BSOD with an error code 0x0000007b.

I tried putting in the recovery cd and it still throws the bsod before it even starts to load anything. The computer posts and boots up fine, but right before the windows loading with the scrolling bar thingie is when this bsod error pops up.

I've pulled the hard drive out and put it in a usb enclosure and it seems fine, no trouble there. I ran scandisk, chkdisk and avg virus scan with nothing showing up.

Any ideas on what to try? Did somehow the boot sector get corrupted?

Thanks for any info.
