As horrible as this may sound, I’m heading over to the Evesham Police Department’s Facebook page as we speak so I can “like” me some DUI suspect mug shots! You know you are going to go check it out too…don’t lie. :D

The department's 6-month-old Facebook page features video surveillance clips, dozens of mug shots, police reports, photos of missing persons and policing initiatives. On Monday, it added names and photos of suspects arrested for drunken driving.

Awesome. I wonder if they will add some other dailiy criminal mugshots, or blotter info.

I know "Innocent until proven guilty" is a kind of old fashioned concept, but it is on the books and all...Might be nice to at least wait for people to be convicted.

They should do this with Johns too.
The post them in the newspaper here but who the hell reads he newspaper anymore

Wow. Way to permanently fuck over your job prospects and what not as long as the site is up.

What assholes.

Anybody notice that all the younger ones were arrested after 'erratic driving' or crashing into things while all the older DUIs were people routinely stopped at DUI checkpoints?

19 - crashed into a tree.
19 - crashed into a mailbox
19 - crashed into a entry gate
43,46,41,52 - caught while driving, didn't crash into anything

Really? Guess the people who were unfortunate enough to get their names and mug shots posted on the site shouldn't have drove drunk or committed a crime to begin with.

I'm all for what the Evesham Township Police are doing and hope more towns adopt the practice.

Aww.. where's the pictures of the cops "shaking down" someone for accidentally catching them on video camera out in public? How about the cops doing lines of confiscated blow? I demand those fun filled photos and video!

First thing that came to my mind...

This undeniably should be considered cruel and unusual punishment considering these photos can't easily be removed from the internet after a suspect serves his time for whatever crime he may or may not have committed. We used to value things like "innocent until proven guilty" or "burden of proof" in this country. Regardless if the asshole DUI suspect is guilty or not, it's not the police's job to ostracize people who have genuine problems with addiction.

Agree.

Oh please it's not hard to not drink and drive, they're just irresponsible. Just the other day I was stuck in traffic for 3 hours and when I get home I find out it's because some drunk faggot killed two elderly people in a wreck. I have no compassion for these people, I hope it ruins their lives.

Note that these are suspects, not convicts. What if someone had erroneously accused you of downloading and/or possessing child pornography, and put your photograph on a police department's Facebook page, pending anything resembling due process?

At least you got the "Goober" part of your name right.

I don't know how it is in NJ, I'm only going by the laws here in Wisconsin, but an arrest of any sort is a public record. Even before your trial the records are public and you can search through them on the state court website. It has your name, address, birthday listed right there for anyone to see and I can guarantee you that potential employers DO look there.

I understand why some people are screaming against this here, but my question is this:

If it's already a matter of public record, why would it be wrong for those PUBLIC records to be attached onto a PUBLIC place like facebook?

Until they have been proven to be criminals, they cannot and should not be punished. Police are not there to punish people, that is the court's job. However, I think we need stricter DUI laws. Enough of these repeat offenders, they need to serve a serious chunk of time if they are guilty.

Innocent until proven guilty has been out the window for DUIs for years. You will typically have your license revoked or be forced to install an interlock before you ever get your day in court.

The media's afraid they'd be made more irrelevant. They want to keep the job of printing police blotters, not let them do it themselves on Facebook ;-)

Well DUI violators are caught drinking and driving anyways and failed DUI tests administered by the police who pulled them over. If we kept letting them go until they show up in court, we'd get more of this crap.

fuck people who drink and drive.anyone caught for dui should have there pics posted every where. My best friend was killed by a drunk, the guy hit the car he and his wife was in and he died at 21 years old. she didn't eve get hurt bad, his wife was never the same again. so that fucker ruined two lives that day. so you know what fuck any one that drinks and drive you get a dui it should be the same jail time as murder, if i take a gun loaded whit one round in it and point it at you and pull the trigger should i go to jail even if it didn't go off? its the same thing whit this you drink and drive your taking that gun and pointing it at people and pulling that trigger.

As stated by Kargatane, the information is already part of public record. Almost all newspapers publish arrest details daily and have for many years.

So, what is the difference between posting on a website versus publishing in the local newspaper? None.

Note that these are suspects, not convicts. What if someone had erroneously accused you of downloading and/or possessing child pornography, and put your photograph on a police department's Facebook page, pending anything resembling due process?

Yeah. I'm not saying it's a bad idea really. I mean "innocent until proven guilty" doesn't mean the authorities can't take reasonable steps to ensure public safety until a verdict is reached. A drivers license isn't a constitutional right, nor is having your car be free of an interlock device. All that stuff is fine.

But in general, I don't like the idea of posting pictures and what not for people because it subjects them to scrutiny and ridicule by their peers before they've had a trial, and before the prosecutors have even decided whether to file charges.

Like one guy said above, what happens when they start doing it to "accused" pedophiles and some guy whose bitter ex-GF falsely accuses him of molesting her kids gets put up there, and fired from his job, or worse?

There is just no value to public safety here.

The sad part is she told the police that the only reason why she was driving at all despite not having a license is because his boyfriend was drunk. Cops said "I don't want to hear it. You can't drive without a license" and gave the key to her drunk boyfriend and let him go while taking her to jail.

Five minutes later their police radio squawked that a guy crashed into a tree and killed a baby.

In this case it's the police's fault more than the drunk guy because at least he let his girlfriend drive him - but still, he should have confirmed her story to the police and say "officer, she's right, I am in no condition to drive".

Big fuck-up all around.

Well, presumably Facebook sees a lot more traffic than some obscure local jail website. The local paper here for example is very cautious on what it reports in the police blotter section. They don't even publish most DUIs.

The local jail has a website where you can look up a roster of inmates, but they don't advertise updates. You'd have to go search the list manually.

Our Sheriff Joke OurPieHole had cameras in the intake/booking section of his jail. I'm pretty sure the lawsuits made him take them down as they were pics of unsentanced inmates.

Bingo. I see this headed to the supreme court.

Neither do I. AFTER they are proven guilty. That used to mean something and sets us apart.

We ain't burning witches any more for a reason.

Ok. So on that same token some chick you have never met in your life can point at you and yell "Rape!", and you are carted off to jail, added to all the sex offender lists, and your picture put up in the Neighborhood.

Doesn't feel so hot now, does it?

Sadly, the above has been known to happen, and it has destroyed many a life.

Whoa there. Watch your grammar, you accidentally capitalized one of your sentences.

And being as a police officer (or the entire police department) is NEVER able to actually convict a person (takes a judge and all that), this does sound like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
