Hi guys, first of all, this build is not for me, (I wish) but it is for my brother's friend Matt, and yes his name is the same as mine.;) I will list the parts that he had in his wish list, and then the list that I made for him.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
"everything"
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$2800 excluding tax and shipping
3) Where do you live?
California
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
cpu, mobo, ram, case, psu, gpu, cd/dvd burner, storage hard drive, sdd(s) for OS and crucial apps, monitor, aftermarket cpu cooler
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
keyboard, mouse
6) Will you be overclocking?
possibly
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
27"
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
1 to 3 months
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
sata3, usb 3, raid, crossfire and sli (x58 mobo)
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Yes, windows 7 x64
Here is his wish list:

Okay, now here is what I suggested:
The case, psu, montior, and motherboard stay the same.
Video card: ATI 5870 reference design
SSD: two 60GB sata 2 ssds in a RAID 0, not sure which ones to get
storage drive: 2TB sata 2 drive that is much cheaper, maybe a Hitachi 2 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache
memory: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-TR3X6...6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276668382&sr=8-6
What do you guys think? Thanks for all your help!
Thanks,
Matt

GPU: Scrap the 470, go with the 5870.
RAM: Dominators are completely overpriced. Stick with 6gb of DDR3-1600 from G.Skill or the XMS from Corsair.
SSD: I would stick with the Intel X25-M G2 for SSD, you could Raid two 80gb but keep in mind with raid you lose TRIM support (unless they recently changed that).
CPU: Good
HDD: WD Black 2TB is a tad cheaper, I don't know much about the 2TB drives so I'll let Danny or someone else comment more here.
Mobo: Pretty much overkill. You could easily save some cash and go with the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R.
Heatsink: Good
Monitor: I won't comment, don't know much about monitors.
Case: Hopefully Danny can post his list of cases so you can look at some recommended cases.

You can save money w/o sacrificing performance by going with Gskill's ripjaw RAM - dominator stuff is overpriced.

Be aware that two ssd's in raid 0 will sacrifice TRIM support, thereby making them perform worse the more they're used.

There's a deal on the thermalright venomous x right now - it should outperform the TRUE. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1526384

edit: wow, ninja'd.

hahaha ninja'd by ONE minute, owned :D :D

I'd leave the fermi in. If your going to be doing photo or video editing, its alot more handy having CUDA. If your just going to be only gaming, then it doesn't matter. Though you can pick up a 480 for less than you could before.
And yes, the motherboard does have a load of stuff thats not needed. The P6X58D series have 1 less x16 slot, but unless your going tri sli with something else for phys-x thats not going to matter. And its 120$ or more less. It still has the usb3, 6gb/s SATA, RAID infact everything that the rampage has thats useful.

Okay, thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll let him know. Also, so it seems that it is more wise to go with one ssd without a raid 0 setup, so do you guys think it's worth it to get a sata 3 ssd? I need to look at benchmarks....

If you have the cash, go ahead and buy the SATA 6Gb/s SSDs.
