nVidia or ATI when on a budget?

I'm building a system, on a budget, for an occasional gamer. A Barton 2500+, DFI ultra infinity, and 512MB worth of matched pair low latency PC-3200 make up the core, leaving about $140 MAX for a vid card, (hopefully less). What do you think would make a solid choice?

hmm i am almost in the same position as Dankimus any advantage buying a 9600xt over a 9600 pro??
