non DVD install

I have old g3 imac i want to instal a os onto. dvd drive dosn't funtion any more.
can i put the mac hard drive in my windows box and carry back to to the mac after i put tiger on it?. i have already tried usb dvd drive mac doesnt seem to boot of usb.

you wont be able to install osx onto your hard drive through a windows machine.

if you can find another mac to use, you can burn the tiger disk image to an external and install the OS. i think you'll need a firewire drive since it's a ppc.

You can use an intel mac, but you have to be aware of the partition differences between ppc and intel.

It's similar, the only difference is that you won't be installing from firewire, but from an internal disk.

Use Disk Utility's restore feature if you've got another Mac. That's how I done Leopard on my iBook.
