I'm happy to announce a new beta version of The Kraken is available. Notable changes are the removal of the autorestart feature and the addition of a new, more reliable method of engaging DLB.

If you are interested in helping to test the new DLB engaging feature, take a look at tear's official post over at AMD Zone.

As tear mentions in the official post, this version is meant for brave souls seeking excitement and more reliable DLB engagement.

Does it work on Ubuntu 11.10 or later?

I don't see why it wouldn't. Though, if you have to ask, you may not be a brave soul seeking excitement. :)

If you decide to give it a try and have issues, then report them--preferably at AMD Zone. Though, reporting issues here is better than not reporting them at all.

I would like to test the beta on one of my machines, but unfortunately, I don't know how to uninstall version 0.6, which is currently running on the machine. (I am not intuitive WRT Linux commands. I just copy what I find in guides.)

This is covered in tear's instructions in the AMD Zone post:

2. Go to client directory
3. Run 'thekraken -u'

If you need more instruction than is listed in tear's post, hop on IRC and someone can help you get the new version installed.

Cool! Just loaded this up on the 4P that was almost never getting DLB.
Restarted the client, which was at 77% complete, and within 30 seconds DLB engaged.
I'll report back what happens when this WU finishes and the next one starts.
Looks like another success story for the [H] Skunkworks!

DLB works *great* with this new build. Prior versions were extremely hit and miss, with miss being the case more often than not, on the Intel 4p systems I've been using. With the new build it seems to be running everytime without issue. :) went from having 5-9% wasted time down to something like 0.2%. Happy camper indeed! Thanks firedfly and tear!

Installed on both 4Ps, had DLB engage within 30 seconds of WU start.:D

All three 4Ps running the new version now and all three kicking on DLB almost instantly after a WU start or if I restart a WU for any reason.
All three are SuperMicro MBs. Two with 6166HE CPUs and 1 with 6128s.
All three running OC BIOS. Ubuntu 10.10

round of applause for firedfly, tear and musky :)
I've been following the entire process, and they really put a lot of effort into developing this...

+1 - I have been beta testing this for a little while now, and have 100% DLB engagement with probably 10 units now, all in under 30 seconds from WU start. This is a big step forward.

You guys can check and see how fast it actually took to engage by looking near the bottom of thekraken.log in your client directory.

Look for a line that looks like this:
Code:
thekraken: 13103: synthetic load manager terminated (run time: 16 seconds)

Sweet Alaskan asparagus tips!
Code:
thekraken: 28378: synthetic load manager terminated (run time: 73 seconds)
From a 2P 5620 on which DLB rarely engages. Excellent!

2P-5645 engaged in 58 seconds.:D

It's a killer, in a good sense. My 4X6128 machine, which previously failed to engage DLB on about one-quarter of the work units, now engages DLB reliably. DLB engages nearly simultaneously with the Folding client start up.

Thank you, tear! Good work.

Quick question.

After installed this new version and started client, I ran "top" command. saw thekraken-FahCo follow with 13x FahCore_a5.exe ... after few seconds (dlb turned on), those a5.exe disappeared - only thekraken-FahCo on top. Is that normal???

Yes, it's fine. The page on AMDZone mentions this; but I completely forgot about it. I too had top open when it fired up for the first time and it freaked me out seeing 64 instances of the core running and murdering the percentage TheKraken displayed. But, as you saw, they quickly go down to more or less zero. (IIRC they're still there, just not doing much of anything) It's all voodoo magic to me; but so long as it works I'm happy. ;)

This is genius! Kudos firedfly and tear!
It basically creates artificial load, sort of a heavy imbalance in system load and the Gromacs core is compelled to engage the DLB. Genius! :)

Finally got a chance to install/run it here last night. DLB engaged within 20 seconds on both systems. I will report what happens on their next WUs.

Good work guys :)

Beer and tamales for both of you. Brilliant work. You are both a credit to [H] and the folding community at large. Salute!

So far this kraken seems to decrease my 690x tpf by a couple minutes, I'm sub 50mins now on 6903! Man I suck

I installed this on my 1p Debian 6 machine, and it turned on DLB within the first 20 seconds.

It was interesting watching the load variance in top, good work guys.

I'll report back on if it made a difference in TPF or not....

It would appear I lost p6903 WU.. I believe this is the first one using the 0.7-Pre11, not sure it that the problem, but here is the console log.

Code:
bowlinra@amd4P:/fah$ ./fah6

Hi bowlinra (team 111065),

Hi bowlinra (team 111065),
Your WU (P6903 R11 C17 G88) was added to the stats database on 2012-06-04 16:09:18 for 448466 points of credit.

Oh Thank You. Thank You... I guess I panicked, thought for sure it would be in the 6PM stat update and it wasn't, check the console and saw:
Code:
[00:19:54] Project: 6903 (Run 11, Clone 17, Gen 88)
[00:19:54] - Error: Could not get length of results file work/wuresults_04.dat
[00:19:54] - Error: Could not read unit 04 file. Removing from queue.

FALSE ALARM ---> My Bad.

I'm guessing you are using langouste. langouste returns the WU out-of-band--meaning a separate process will return the WU allowing the main process to download and start a new unit. The errors you are seeing are common when using langouste.

Is there any commands or log files I could have viewed to determine the WU was sent?

bowlinra, whenever in doubt you can check /tmp/langouste-$USER/ directory
to see what Langouste did and what it's currently doing (run ls -lrt in said
directory to see logs in chronological order).

Glad to hear it was a false alarm :)

Based on comments I'm sure this is true for everyone, but across my three systems running this new version, I have completed 12 to 15 WUs with this running and DLB has started reliably every time. No issues. All sizes of 69xx and 8101.
Excellent work!

Working well for me, DLB engaged in 33 seconds on my new 32-core box. Keep up the great work!

I don't know whether it's attributable to the new Kraken version or not, but when compared to work unit processing with the older Kraken, both my 4P boxes are processing 6903 and 6904 work units with faster frame times now, consistently faster.

Happened to my 6904 today .. WU was completed few hours ago ... and supposely got result on last update ..

Hi sbinh (team 38156),
Your WU (P6904 R1 C26 G67) was added to the stats database on 2012-06-06 15:08:44 for 31541 points of credit.

What? Dual x5650@ 3.9ghz can't complete that WU on time?

Did PG make any change to "prefer" time on these WUs ?
