I don't have a whole lot of time to search, so forgive me.

I just purchased the above CPU. Normally I do stock cooling and it's fine. I don't OC and my temps are usually fine. But with this stock cooler, it is annoyingly loud and cooling seems, meh.

I have this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119068

I added an 80mm fan to the side panel there blowing out of the case, wondering if I should turn it and have it blow on the cpu fan?

I've measured it out and this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&Tpk=hyper plus 212

I did some crude measuring and it should fit.

So my question is this - I will probably see a noticeable drop in temps, but will I see a noticeable decrease in noise?

I'll probably buy a new case down the line as well. But for the time being the cooler would be purchased now.

Thanks.

Interesting. But I really don't want to spend $80.

With the current case I wouldn't have anywhere to put it as well. Unless I replaced the one rear exhaust fan, which I'm not too keen on doing.

Thanks though.

The Hyper 212+ is a really good little cooler. However, I wouldn't buy it from Newegg because their price for it is really high. It's around $30 at other stores. I can't comment on the noise, but you could probably use Speedfan or something supplied by your mobo manufacturer to control the fan speed.

I would turn that 80mm fan around so it's blowing into the case. This allows fresh air to get to the CPU, NB, and MOSFETS.

I have the Cooler Master Hyper TX2 (an older version of the one you linked to), and it works great on my Athlon II X4 635...using the TX2 and IC Diamond 7, my temps are about 8-10 degrees centigrade above ambient and only go up about 11 degrees centigrade under full load.

I'd imagine that the Hyper 212 would work even better, considering it doesn't have the weird redirect housing on it that the TX2 has. I say go for it.

PS: The Centurion 5 is a kick ass case, if a bit dated...I've got a lot of great gaming memories associated with that case :)

I picked this up yesterday because I just couldn't take the stock fan noise any longer. Had a $10 certificate so I got it for just about $20.

However my idle temps are about 45C with prime95 load testing up to like 65C.

Some of the reviewers reports significant drops in their temps, idling much lower than me. What could be the issue? The paste application, my case airflow?

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

PS: I do intend on picking up something better, but it's quieter now and that was my temporary goal.

Thermal paste may be the issue, try reapplying it. Best Buy occasionally has the corsair h50 on sale for $60 as does frys so you may want to pick up one of those.
