This person already has the monitor, speakers/headphones, soundcard (will use onboard), mouse/keyboard and is willing to spend $1200 max. So basically the case and everything that goes inside for $1200. It will be used for gaming. He will not overclock and prefers a single GPU. I don't know much so I am asking you for advice. The only part I know about is video cards and I think he should get the new 8800GT which he will upgrade in about 2 years. Someone will build the pc for him once he buys the parts:

-video card: 8800GT $270 http://www.amazon.com/XFX-GeForce-8...s&ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1193725347&sr=1-1
-Case?
-Power supply?
-motherboard?
-CPU?
-2 gb RAM (he will add 2 more in a year or 2)
-1 large hard drive
-cdrw/dvd burner
-windows vista home? about $100

Should he buy vista now and do a clean install with it or keep using his XP and buy vista later when games require it?

I hope that is everything. Thanks

Is his copy of XP a retail or OEM version? If it's OEM and already installed on a PC, then he can't use that copy. I say go for Vista now. Despite everyone's predictions, Vista is going to be the dominant OS for gaming in the future.

Anyway I'm going to assume this is a gaming PC. Here are my recommendations:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping CPU - $270
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Intel P35 Motherboard - $130
Crucial Ballistix BL2KIT12864AA804 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 RAM - $89
EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512MB PCI-E Video Card - $270
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $120
LITE-ON LH-20A1S 20X DVD±R SATA DVD Burner - $30
Corsair HX520 520W PSU - $104
Windows Vista Home Premium OEM - $105
---
Total: $1118 Plus Tax and shipping

I agree with Danny and jskagg.

What size monitor does he have?

I doubt he needs raid, since you listed a "single" hdd. So, you could actually drop down to the DS3L instead.

he has 1680 x 1050 lcd but doesn't mind turning down resolution just to run the games. He only needs that 1 hard drive. Thanks
