mY 6600K just popped in a power outage so I am in need of a new setup.

I'm not much of a gamer, run Cities Skylines mostly, so do not need top of the line. Looking to spend about $500cdn. Will be just the cpu/mobo and reuse my DDR4 ram, 700W psu, M.2 drive and gtx970

Been a long time since i built and am leaning towards a 5800x and a 550 mobo. Do not know an intel equivalent and price competitor.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

I was thinking of the 5600 too. It's the old "I want the ferrari but really only need a yugo" syndrome......
First, there is a 5600 and a 5600x. The 5600x has a bit more oomph.

Second, there 5600x is not a yugo. More like a Ford....

I think I would push the following:
Intel i5-13500
Asrock B760M pro rs/d4

Many more cores(6+8) for your money

The 13500 is $100 usd more than the 5600x . It's probably overkill and out of budget but a better buy than a 5800x. Especially since the 5000 series is end of life.

That mix of motherboard/cpu still fits the budget

Yeah it looks like the 13500 is a better cpu for the money vs AM4 stuff right now. More threads and an edge in single thread performance which can play out in games. If you rolled a 6600k till the wheels came off this should hold for quite some time.
