Subject pretty much says it all.

Right now I have a Sager 5660 that is 9-10ish pounds and a 15in screen with a battery life of about an hour. This isn't exactly ideal for carrying around campus. I'm farily sure I went overboard when ordering it and got one that's just too powerful and sucks up battery life too fast...specs are in my sig.

I need something that's light, small, and perfect for simply running XP Pro w/ office XP on it. I just want something to take notes on really.

I'd like a battery life of at least 3 hours, if not 4.

I'd like a small and very light laptop, like less than 4 to 5 pounds.

Screen size doesn't matter as long as it's no smaller than 12" and has a decent quality screen so I can see what I'm typing :)

I'm on a budget and would like to spend between $500 and $1000 on it.

Built in wireless would rule but I doubt my budget will allow it.

I dunno if there's a laptop out there that meets all of these specifications, but if anyone could give me some info on a notebook that comes close I would really appreciate it.

Thanks very much,
-Matt

you should get a panasonic toughbook...you can drop it from an airplanes overhead compartment and it'll still work!!!

Check out Averatec notebooks. They are light, cheap and will do what you want quite nicely.

I believe they are available at WalMart.com and Bestbuy.

This one looks pretty darn good to me, however battery life is only about 2 hours. Not being in the market, I guess this seems to be a good deal.

The price is only $799 at walmart.com

I was thinking the exact same thing. I've heard great things about how durable and light (2 - 3 lbs) these laptops are. Haven't used one myself, though.

take a look at the 12in laptops.

I have an IBM X24 and it's a good companion to my desktop. The newer X-series are even better and more powerful, if you must have optical then Panasonic W2 or Fujitsu P5000 series.

get an older X or T series IBM Thinkpad.

you'll never look back.

totally the truth. i have a 600mhz x20 p3 (256mb) and it is prefect for office, xp, web browsing, etc. (IBM thinkpad)

its super light (3.5lbs) and super small and with speedswitch or something you can get over 3hrs of battery life easily.

i use it around the house and at school with wireless card (add on)

you can ebay an x-series thinkpad for under $1000 easily. they are a good desktop supplement.

tip: 600mhz and 256 BARELY lets me run divx/xvid movies so with a little more power you'll be able to use it for media aswell.
