messenger pop up... how do i get rid of

with every new install of windows there is a pop up, not an IE one but its from messenger or something like that. i went to a site that lets me disable it but it was like a dillion years ago. can someone tell me how to disable this pop up? thanks.
 
start > run > (type) services.msc > DClick messenger > Startup type > disabled

And furthermore, FIREWALL.

You must go forth young one, and install thy self a holy firewall, to filter the trash and smut before it hits thy box. Only then will thy know true peace.
 
very true I was a bit pressed for time and limited the answer :p

I too highly recommend a rule based software firewall and a hardware based NAT firewall if you can swing it
 
ah thanks. i found this info somewhere and i dont install windows very often so it got lost in a pile of other bookmarks i rarely visit... :rolleyes:
