Maxtor external hdd. Can't write to it on my friend's max

I'm at my friends house with my external firewire maxtor drive. I've been using it on my xp system and I'm trying to grab some of his files off his g5 osx system. It says that the disc can't be modified, in that it's locked for some reason.
Any ideas?

Are they different file systems? I assume your system is using NTFS, the XP default, and that system is using the Mac file allocation table, w.e it may be (I am assuming FAT32?).

I'm trying to format my Maxtor now and NTFS is the only selection available from the pull-down menu.
What gives? Will XP not format it in Fat32? Maybe I should try formatting it on my friend's Mac, but he lives pretty far away...!
