My Aunt has a Compaq Presario S6010 and she wants to make it faster. She can't afford a new system atm.

Specs:

Intel Celeron 2.7GHz/400, PGA478
Gamila - GL6E (MS-6577) I think the mobo is by Microstar  Intel 845GV chipset
256 MB PC2700 ram
40GB HDD 5400rpm
CDRW and misc stuff
Win XP Home

Detailed specs: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00047925.pdf

I figured if I add more ram, i.e 512MB PC3200, and a 7200rpm HDD it would be a bit quicker?
The Celeron 2.7GHz is the bottleneck I think (equiv ~2GHz P4?) Would upgrading that be worthwhile cause I'm not sure what the motherboard supports. I can't find enough info on the MS 6577.
The warranty has expired, so I can open up the case. I know there aren't much room for upgrades. Any suggestions? i.e CPUs etc

I'd probably start in the same direction you were thinking. Upgrade the ram to 512MB or more.. and jump up to a newer 7200RPM w/8MB buffer HDD. Other than that, the CPU is your next upgrade priority... also make sure you throw on a fresh copy of XP if you upgrade the HDD as that could be where some of the slowness is coming from...

I agree, step up to 512MB RAM, then hard drive, then CPU. Whatever value RAM brand you prefer personally should be fine. There's a (shameless plug) Sticky in Disk Storage that will help you choose a HDD. Find any information you can on your mobo's CPU support. It should support 533FSB, allowing you to use low end P4s. If it has Prescott/90nm support, a Celeron D of roughly equal clock speed to what you have now will still be a nice boost - the Northwood Celerons sucked. Another good choice in the Prescott arena is the 2.4A.

Update:
MB name: MSI MS-6577, HP name: Gamila-GL6E
Supports 1.4GHz to 2.8GHz or higher
Socket 478 for Intel P4 Williamette and Northwood Procs
Intel 845GV chipset
FSB 400/533

Looks like you're stuck with a 533FSB Northwood. There's an outside chance it will support the 3.06, although without HT. There's a 2.66GHz P4 Northwood w/ 533FSB. Since it doesn't support Prescott, Celeron D is out. So are the 'C' 800FSB Northwoods.

I found out another HP computer uses the same motherboard and runs on the P4 2.8GHz 533 FSB. I assume this is the Northwood core?

I saw a P4 2.8GHz for sale and the info says Intel P4 Prescott 2.8GA Hz CPU/533FSB
I'm confused now since I thought Prescott P4s run on 800 FSB?
