Kinect Does Sign Language Translation

That software looks very cool and could be really helpful to learn sign language.

The tools for innovation in gaming are there, developers just need to get more creative with how to use the technology.

Seems so far the only creative people are doing things besides games with that.

Yeah I was going to say the most creative uses of the Kinect has always been with people reverse-engineering it to do other things than play games.

This does remind me though back when I was in high school I went to Stanford University on an "engineer week" type tour, in one of the labs there was a group trying to do something similar with sign language recognition. They were using the Nintendo Power Glove (which was new at the time to kind of age date me), I don't think they went very far with it though.

in other news , microsoft patents sign language...........on a electronic device. (its new and innovative cause its software)

Cant the mute and the deaf both use the keyboard and monitor with greater efficiency?

Depends how slowly and accurately you need to do sign language for it to pick up, most people who sign can do so faster than most typists.

This is the kind of stuff I love about technology.

Next up.

Sign language moaning for porn :p

*middle finger

No, it doesn't respond to that. When the Red Ring of Death appeared, my middle finger had no effect.

Sidebar. MS sold a limited number of Kinect for Windows/PC devices. I hope to get some time to dink with it. Bought it new for $50.

The impact here is not on what the deaf and mute can do but what most hearing people cannot do... read sign language. This would allow kiosks and eventually portable devices that can read sign language for the mute and deaf so hearing people understand them.

Stupid Question:

Why do Drive Thru ATM's at Banks have instructions in Braille?

This is true,my wife signs fast and I have quite a few friends who sign very fast as well....

This is going to be tough to iron out the bugs for the same reason voice to text translator is a pain to work with... Accents. Here in America, we use ASL but there is so many different signs for the same word so it would the kinect recognize them all? Same is true for other sign languages I'm sure.

But major props for making the leap.

Stupid Question:

So taxi passengers can get money after bank hours?

Because they are made from the same parts as other machines?
