Comcast sent me a letter recommending that I upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem so that I can take advantage of higher Internet speeds in my area.

Today Radio Shack had the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem on sale for $69 ($30 off). I chose it because according to this page it has all the DOCSIS 3.0 features.

Both the laptop and the iPhone 3GS are connected to my router via 802.11G.
Here is my data:

BEFORE DOCSIS 3.0
Laptop Test 1
Ping 17ms
Down 35.04
Upload 6.64

Laptop Test 2
Ping 10ms
Down 35.37
Upload 7.33

iPhone 3GS Test 1
Ping 33ms
Down 6.17
Upload 7.04

iPhone 3GS Test 2
Ping 35ms
Down 6.45
Upload 9.57

Team Fortress 2
Ping 34-41

AFTER I INSTALLED MY NEW DOCSIS 3.0 MODEM
Laptop Test 1
Ping 17ms
Down 54.35
Upload 10.56

Laptop Test 2
Ping 16ms
Down 54.65
Upload 10.6

iPhone 3GS Test 1
Ping 27ms
Down 9.12
Upload 10.61

iPhone 3GS Test 2
Ping 32ms
Down 10.16
Upload 11.27

Team Fortress 2 (same server)
Ping 33-35

I gotta say that I am very happy with these results!

i didn't get a letter from comcast but i decided to ditch the DOCSIS 2 modem they supplied with my business account with a SB6121 and my speed jumped as well, glad i did it. Before my speeds were like 20 down/5 up and when i put the motorola in and got it working i was seeing speeds of like 50 down 20 up

When i upgraded to the same modem, I saw a boost in my speed. Then a couple of months later i upgraded my service to 50Mbps and didn't see an increase, even wired. Come to find out that my aging linksys wrt54g was actually too slow to keep up with the speed. Upgraded to cheapo dlink wireless n and my network is flying.
