If you are going to go for a skills based resume you should only list the places you worked on the bottom and the employment dates. It seems like you are mixing the two. If I were you I would get rid of the skills based nature and just move the work experience to the top and expand on the skills in the work experience like a standard resume.

Things I have bolded in my reply you can get rid of as they are not needed. Also change your concentration words to emphasis. Let me know if you have any questions.

I was wondering how you guys suggest phrasing a email response to a job posting. So far mine have been very simple, just a "Hello, I came across your posting for a XXXX admin position. I have attached my resume for consideration. Thank you. Signed."

I need to repost my resume, its a few pages back, but I have since updated/changed it and now that I am hunting, any input is very welcomed. I think personally its a bit to long.

Anyone have any job openings in the Portland, OR area? For the right job I can put in my 2 weeks. Currently titled as Service Desk Analyst II, I do a ton more than that (BES Admin, Barracuda Admin, AD Admin, etc, etc).

what advice do you have for someone attending a technical school and doing a career change. i have currently trying to get a+ and n+ and mcdst. i think my previous 15 years of experience in an entirely unrelated field is holding me back from getting any kind of interview. a woman at the school here is suppose to help me work on my current resume but not as of yet gotten back to me. should i just wait until i achieve at least one certification before changing resume?

They must of had some database corruption because I notice that some of my posts are gone.

Check out my resume. I'm trying to find the right mix of bullet points as well like some others. I have skills page that takes up one full page right now. I can't put any experience on it until the 2nd page. Suggestions on consolidating the info.

You may have to turn off auto resize in your broswer to see the pics correctly.

They must of had some database corruption because I notice that some of my posts are gone.

It crashed this morning as I was perusing the Photography >> A picture I took
(and adjacent) subsections. Hope it wasn't the fault of Opera, here,
loading tabs speedily...

Quick question that I didn't know where else to put it;

Does anyone here have a copy of the Robert Half 2009 IT Salary Guide? I saw it was posted last week, I requested my copy, but they are slow to respond. I wouldn't normally ask, but I need it for Monday... ???

Did we loose another bit of postings?
I will have to repost my resume and the job I am after.

Here is my resume. I had someone at the Career Center at my college revise it, but she didn't change very much, which I guess is a good thing, but I wanted a good way to emphasize experience gained through my coursework, since I don't have any work experience as of yet. I'd like to keep it to one page, so a few of the work details can be slimmed down to add things(maybe references) if you guys recommend. Anyways, here it is:

Well, I've been reading through this thread for a while now, looking through a lot of examples, and applying a lot of the advice some of you employers have dished out (fortunately for us all we have hiring managers here to give us the inside view of the hiring and firing process). Before I had a bit of a garbage resume, but after I've been doing some editing I do feel a little more confident about sending it out more but I think it needs a little surgery:
When I put this resume into .doc format, Word '07 with narrow margins it usually totals about 2 1/2 pages. Too long maybe?

So my resume is so outdated and ugly it needs major work
Anyone willing to take a look at it and give me some ideas?
If so PM me and i'll email you a copy

I think this thread died months ago... I'm still waiting for someone to look at my resume I posted like 6 or 7 months ago.

I'm sorry guys but I just don't have the time anymore to do the in-depth reviews I used to do over the last 4 years. I've only seen a couple other reviewers take a stab here and there but it pretty much looks like this was a "one person show". I'd like to keep this around as it's a great resource of previous reviews. You can learn a lot just by reading through all the other reviews that were done over the years...

Ok guys, I need some advise here. Got the resume sorted out thanks to here and another forum. Got a email tonight requesting a Phone interview and In Person interview this week. Sweet. The problem is I have NEVER interviewed. I have the dress code, be promt, ect down, but advice is what I need.

So I hope this thread is not dying as it is very helpful. I am not very good at resumes but I like to think I am fairly proficient at communication and interview techniques.

So as a tidbit that I would like to add; Lately I see people applying for tons of jobs and that is it. In todays environment you need to be proactive. I usually apply for a position and log it down on an Excel spreadhseet. It has position, link to posting, company, what my last action was, date applied, and contact information. That way I am not applying more than once, and I have easy access to contact information. Depending on the job I usually call once a week, or every 5 days. Just be very brief, dont waste there time, and always remember there name and address them at the end (EX 'Thank you Susan, you have been a great help. Have a great day'). You want to be remembered if anyone asks about you.

I could use some help with my resume :) could someone message me!

I can't decide which to use from a grammatically correct standpoint as well as an IT standpoint...

OBJECTIVE
To secure a position with growth potential within an organization where I can effectively contribute proven technical, business, interpersonal and creative skills supporting, managing and enhancing the company’s technology infrastructure.

ALSO for anyone looking for a resume critique I will offer my help. I'm very well versed in English and how to word things (yes I know this is ironic based on what I posted above...) and I have had my resume critiqued a lot by career counselors so I know a little bit about it.

If you are waiting for someone to look at your resume, I will at least offer my time to you so you can get some fresh eyes on it.

Send me a PM

does anyone have any connections to IT job openings in Indiana, preferably the Lafayette or Indianapolis area? :)

I'm sorry I haven't been too active on this thread this year. I've been extremely busy and just can't respond and critique resumes like I have in the past. Frankly, I'd like to encourage anyone needing resume help to start from the beginning of this thread and read it through completely. I know it's a lot of work but you will see the same questions asked time and time again. Good luck to you all, I know times can be hard right now but hang in there!!

Glad to see there was some action in here. I cant do resumes worth a crap but other interviewing advice I feel I can solicit.

Can someone help me write this

In bold you need change wording. The sentences do not make sense or do not provide any action. Please PM me if you need more advice with this.

You need to delete the interests section. No offense, but a recruiter is not going to care about interests as his/her job is finding the best candidate for a position. Your Additional Info section should be renamed to Skills or Proficiencies as this will tag a resume computer reader.

EDIT:

Your most recent job should be listed from the top.

You are listing too many adjectives in one bullet point. You should keep them to 3 max and that is pushing it. Please either PM or send me your resume for more help.

Just for a heads up.

I am 23 and hold an undergrad from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in MIS. I currently work as a Systems Admin for a school system and while I was in college I worked for the Career Center as a IT Tech as well as a Project Management intern for a banking software company.

In relation to resumes I maintained a database full of graduate information as well as attended numerous resume and network building workshops. In addition I served as a member of SIFE where I compete 2 out of the 4 years I was in the group.

I apologize if the formatting looks a little strange. I pasted it from a Word document. Thank you guys for taking a look. I appreciate it.

You are listing too many jobs and certain ones that do not pertain to your direction that you want to go in IT. Since you do not have major gaps in your work history I would trim your experience to 3 relevant positions and try to expand on your skills.

Way way too long. I would be wary about listing Folding@home as volunteer experience for Stanford University. Unless you attend that University it is a "trap" point.

I would either restart (I know it sounds dickish of me) or just cut out the technical experience completely. What you need to shoot for is integrating the technical experience into your job descriptions but at 4-5 bullet points per job.

Remember a good guideline is to make it easy for the recruiter to read, understand and want to offer you and interview. That is your entire goal. Do not give an interview on paper, give an impression that you are worth talking to.

Skills

Experience

Again like I mentioned in the post above your bullet points are way way too long. You are also confusing two resume formats. If you want to go for a "skills based" resume you need to list your "computer/networking" skills and then right under it you just list the companies and dates you worked. Do you list anything more than the companies and dates if you are going for this resume type.

If you are going for a "chronological based" then you should talk about your experience under the companies you list and keep the skills section to 1 sentence.

Can someone help me write this

IT Specialist (Network), serving as an expert consultant on Local Area Networks (LAN) as well as Storage Area Networks (SAN).

• Identify and define technical requirements to the designing, developing, implementing, managing, and supporting of systems, networks, and storage networks. Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware and software to ensure the availability and functionality of systems as well as maintaining computers with up-to-date with the latest security patches.
• Perform research/evaluation in the areas of advanced computer platforms, operating systems, and network connectivity techniques, software systems design concepts, and logic and software/hardware inter-active control plans.
• Develop, revise, and implement software sub-systems with improvements consistent with technological advances and/or changes in program requirements. Optimize the functionality of networks and systems and diagnose, and recover failed systems.

I'm not too sure it flows well.

I would trim the top line to something like this:

Network Specialist serving as an expert consultant on both Local Area Networks as well as Storage Area networks.

No need to abreivate.

Your first bullet point mixes both network architecture with systems architecture, something that you dont mention in your summary. Just something to consider.

Your other bullets may be a bit too technical for any of the non-technical screeners, just keep that in mind too.

Would you like a cookie? You need to be less cocky in your replys for a 23 year old with minimal experience. Where is your resume? JMrobers where are you!?! :p

The recruiters are RARELY the people that "offer" interviews in the IT field, a few more years of experience and Im sure you will realize that. Try and get involved in the technical interview process and you will see how it all works.

Not disagreeing with you or anything, but those are verbs.

Everyone, something that Ive seen for years in this thread and I dont think its ever been addressed. Your resume can NEVER be static, its always has to be, obviously, dynamic in nature. This also goes for your cover letter, which should be included on EVERY resume sent.

Its great to get a good baseline resume, but always remember that you are going to want to tailor it for EACH job that you interview for. Case and point, I applied to EXTREMELY large contracting company about 4 years ago and included to them my FULL unedited resume. This job I applied for was for a Sr. Network Engineer, I was grilled for 1hr on VMware ESX because it was on my resume. No where in the job description did it mention anything about VMware, they were trying to see if I was bullshitting like WAY to may people in our field do. So remember, your resume must be tailored. Its a very good idea to remove technologies that you may have used years and years ago and not anymore.

Another example, ive seen MANY resumes that say people have experience with Windows server/Linux server administrations... You need to be VERY specific in nature with the technologies that you guys work on becuase if I was the person giving you the technical interview you would be grilled on the newest and OLDEST server technologies(can anyone say policy editor for NT4??). just for food for thought. Im going to be updating my resume, so Ill probably post it up for a critique as well.

Listen all I am doing is offering advice, whether someone decides to take the advice or not is completely up to them. I do not claim to have ultimate experience and the only reason I explained any qualifications is to make it known that I was not someone who had never seen a resume before.

I do not know how I was trying to be "cocky", in fact I revised my resume hundreds of times while I worked for Career Services and took any advice, criticism, etc and worked to improved my resume. Resumes are a stressful thing and many times the skill is not taught in college.

Many times it takes a lot of negatives and failures in the process before you get the hang of it. That is really the only way I even got a grasp on it.

As far as recruiters goes it really depends on the company. Every interview except for my banking software company did a phone interview/pre interview before I interviewed with anyone in the company. These included the following.

- Sandhills Publishing: Systems Intern - 3 interviews. I made it to round 2. This was a phone interview, recruiter in person interview. 3rd interview was supposedly with the Systems Manager.

- Hyvee - MIS Intern - Phone interview followed by a in person interview with key MIS management

- Career Services - IT Intern. Email questionnaire followed up by in person interview. Go the job and person doing the interview (my former boss) had way more experience than any recruiter you will find (maybe not any, but pretty close).

Tek Systems Network Tech- 2 Phone interviews, these people are recruiters, so all my interviews were with recruiters.

- Union Pacific - MIS Intern - Recruiter in person interview.

- Hyland Software - Systems Installer - Phone interview followed by in person interview. Turned down job.

- Major School System - System Admin - Recruiter in person interview followed by recruiter/principal interview followed by network team interview - Current position

List goes on, but I live in a state that has an over abundance of college graduates vs how many jobs are available so it is possible to weed out many applicants where I live.
