revision of the key qualifcations section, organized by category:

Summary: A computer technician with 5 years experience in information technology, including strong software and hardware troubleshooting skills, networking, and call center experience.

Key Qualifications
•5 years of proven customer service skills with the ability to handle high-pressure environments in a professional and effective manner across a variety of skill levels.
•Networking: Network+ Certified (N10-002) Registration: 208887112 Validation: 2000373715, July 2004. 2 years configuring consumer routers including TCP/IP and subnets, port forwarding, remote administration and WEP for SOHO installations. 1 year supporting enterprise domains in professional call centers and help desks.
•Clients: 7 years working with Microsoft Windows (DOS-XP/SP2) including workgroup and domain memberships, resources mapping, administrating user interfaces, and NTFS security. 1 year with Novell 4/5 and Client 4.83 in a Novell/Windows/Unix mixed corporate environment; responsible for client configuration and resource mapping. 1 year with TCP/IP networking with MAC OS 8-10.
•Programming: 4 years writing pages in HTML and 1 year working with Visual Studio.NET.
•Hardware: 5 years experience designing, building, upgrading, and deploying x86 systems. 5 years providing troubleshooting support to clients in a freelance capacity. Proficient in installing hardware from drives to motherboards, updating drivers, installing software and associated patches.

I maintained most of the software listings under each job I had like in the previous resume. For the key qualifications I tried to organize them from either most used or experienced to least used or least amount of time experienced. It looks a little jumbled to me, the only way I could sub classify each I think I would have to remove all the references to software and OS support in each job to do the trick. I felt that would take away alot from the work history, any suggestions?

in response to Listor, Auto|MaG, and Alex_N:

I have a few general comments regarding all three of your resumes. Firstly, I would suggest reading all the comments in this entire thread if you haven't already. A lot of the formatting and such that is in your resumes is already addressed there.

-Kill the "Objective" statement and replace it with a "Summary" statement that describes you in one or two sentences. Here's what each and every objective statement should really be: "I want a job at your company. Here's my resume." There is no relelvant information given there unless it's for special circumstances -like if you're only seeking part-time work or are not looking to advance yourself. In any case, all that can be passed along in a good cover letter and should not belong on your resume -especially the first thing said about you!

-If you're going to list your skills AND your work history, shorten up your work history to just the dates, company name, your title, and maybe the location. Once again, if your skills are listed up front, there is no need to re-state the information.

Personally, I hate the chronological resume format. I think it's a waste of time for the employer to have to read through your life history just to find out if you can manage a Cisco router. If you list your skills and the amount of experience you have with them (and in a easy to understand format), that's all they'll need to read.

I haven't done this before but I might as well post an example of my current resume along with the cover letter for you guys to either use as reference or criticize:

=====<COVER LETTER>=======
To [company]:

My name is Jon Roberts and I'm interested in your open position for an AutoCAD Drafter and have attached a recent copy of my resume to this FAX.

As my resume will show, I have an extensive AutoCAD background starting from 1996 including platforms such as Mechanical Desktop and Inventor. Currently I'm working with Autodesk Land Development Desktop and Map. I also have 3D CAD experience in mainframe systems such as CADAM and NCAD within the B-2 program in both electrical and mechanical design / manufacturing. In addition, I have also been an AutoCAD trainer ranging from basics to advanced specialized platforms. In all, I have 14 years of CAD experience.

I have worked in a variety of fields starting with mechanical and electrical but have transitioned into architectural, GIS, and civil areas within the past few years. I have also worked at USAF Plant-42 as their sole CAD operator and manager of GIS information regarding their facility.

I am currently employed full-time but am always looking to better my situation and would love the opportunity to know more about the position and see if my skills may contribute to your organization's goals. Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions either via email or cell phone anytime.

Thank you for your time,

At first glace you've got no job experience. You really need to fill it in with some more details or else others will make the same assumption by how it looks in black and white. It addtion to that, you've listed no qualifications. This should be the first 1/4 or more of your resume after the summary/objective. And don't be afraid to adjust it to make it fit better to the job you're going after. I'd also put the eductation portion down towards the bottom with the certs.

Ok,

I guess I am not understanding. Are you saying that the Advanced Network Specialist position I have had since 2001 is not enough job experience?

You indicated I have no job experience based on what? Is my job description too vague for my previous positions or does my job experience just flat out mean nothing in the I.T. industry?

I just want to know if you are telling me that I need better jobs with more experience or I need to elaborate more on my job functions working for AT&T Wireless.

Thanks again!

Move the date first ...

January, 2001 - Present -- Advanced Network
Company Name & Address

blah blah blah

August, 1999 - December, 2000 -- Receivables Management
Company Name & Address
blah blah blah

Let them see the time frame first ... you only have two job experience, and one position in IT ... so make the most of it ...

Simple and clean IMO. My only thought would be to lose the "Objective" at the top and replace it with something like a "summary". We all know what your objective is -calling a document a "resume" pretty clearly states your objective. Read some of the previous posts in this thread for ideas and pointers for a good summary statement. Other than that, looks good.

BTW, any more job experience and I would consider changing your format to a more "skills" related list than a "job history" list.

Thanks, I'll re-arrange some things when I'm in the office.

formatting looks like shit, but heres the just of it.
im only 20, which is why my work experience seems kind of lacking.
the plus is that right now im working for the KPDSB, and thats where im applying for the full time tech job.

Can somone please look over my resume? I keep on sending it out and don't get much feedback.

Thanks,

For bealzz:

1) I'd change your summary around a bit. First, you do have 4 years of IT experience and that counts more than your education does (at least to me). I would mention that first -not the fact that you're a CS student.

2) Add information in your Education section about how far along you are. Just listing the years of education isn't too helpful if you didn't manage to complete any credits and just spent the time at frat parties! Phrases I personally like are "76 completed credit hours towards BS. in Computer Science". This shows your progress in a measureable format. I also woudn't worry about what the "focus" was. You'll have an opportunity to tell them about your skills later.

3) Put your Skills section just after your Summary statement. This is the meat of what an employer wants to know anyways. Don't make them wait 'till the end of the resume to tell them if you know how to setup a VPN. I would also change the "General" skills to something like "Software/Hardware" skills. I also think your skills need more of a measureable aspect to them. Saying you have a skill in Java and C++ doesn't tell me how MUCH. Can you program? Can you debug. How long have you been working with Java? The entire time in school? Was any of it in the working environment? See how little I know about your skills? Now some stuff is fine saying something like "familiar with MS Office Suite versions 95-2003". Mainly 'cause you're only showing that you know how to use the software. But your primary skills need more of a description that someone can measure.

4) Trim down your Work Experience section. Don't bother listing work experience that isn't relevant. If you want to convey that you have "customer service" skills beyond the work experience you DO list, put that in your Skills section! Your Work Experience list will grow in the future to where I would remove even the description of what you did there. Since this is a resume for a fairly short amount of work experience, I'd not worry about leaving what you have at the moment.

5) I woudn't include hobbies on your resume. Not relevant. There are some things outside of work and education that would help but they would be things that indicate more about your skills (like the ability to speak in public, lead a group, organize, ect.). I don't believe that any of the ones you listed meet that category, sorry!

6) Don't bother with references on a resume unless they are short quotes from fairly important people in the world. Your average reference list will be filled out with a general employment application that most employers use. Therefore, don't worry about putting the info on your resume.

Thanks,

1) Must have a Summary Statement! No one wants to read your life story to know what you can do. You need a "summary statement" at the very top of this resume. I don't konw if you're a forklift driver or a Cisco-based WAN adminstrator.

2) Forget about your work history -it's way too long. You don't even list what your job title is. I don't know if you were the janitor there or the CIO. Even more so, I don't care. I need to know what you can do for me first. List your skills in an organized format that will catch my attention and that should help.

3) Don't bother with the hobby list. Not relevant.

4) Education? Formal training? Professional associations/memberships?

5) Same as my last post, I need more of a measureable description of the skills you do list. For instance, you mention SQL Server 7.0. Are you "familiar" with it (meaning you have read about it in a magazine and played with it at home) or can you set it up and manage it? --and don't make me read your life history to find out. Just tell me!

6) You need information about your location. My guess is that you're living in Illinois North of Chicago but that's only 'cause I grew up in Evanston myself!!!

Lastly, if you're looking to do website design and want to catch people's attention by sending them to a site somewhere, an online resume won't work. I'd point you to my own site project that I built a couple of years ago for this very purpose:

http://www.unofficial3d.com/atc/

It took me months to get the site the way I wanted it and was happy with it's arrangement. I'm not so happy with things now (my own online resume is waaay out of date and I don't even like some of the ways I worded things there now). I think that the idea is still there of how to convey what sort of things you can do for someone above using a resume.

Hope this helps...

replying to jmroberts.

ive moved my skills upto the top with headings as follows.

General Software/Hardware
10 years experience in;
• Microsoft Windows [3.1 through 2003 server] configuration and deployment
• Computer Hardware/Software Installation and Configuration/Troubleshooting
• Microsoft Office [Word, Excel, FrontPage, Outlook, Access] usage

• 2 years of Linux [SuSE, Red Hat] client configuration
• 2 years of Java, C++, Visual Basic .NET, Pseudo-code programming and debugging in a school environment

Networking
4 years experience in;

• Network Design and Optimization, Sub netting
• Ethernet/Wireless/Fiber media
• TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, RIP, HTTP, FTP, HTML

Information Security Skills;
2 years experience in;

• Design and Implementation of Security Policies
• Network Security Principles and Implementation
• Firewall Design and Implementation

Now id like to put in somewhere up above that the maintenance and upgrades where on our network of over 1000+ computers. and that it was just me that looked over the client side of everything, from setting up outlook for exchange server to fixing OBDC locations for SQLserver, im just not sure how i could write that out and where i could put it.

ive also taken out the park attendant job experience since it was pretty much useless, and gotten rid of hobbies alltogether, but what i was wondering was if i could re-write some of my hobbies, like im big into camping, multiday hikes/canoe trips which take quite a bit of planning and ive also done just freelance computer fixings for friends and colleagues. should i just leave that out and go with what i have or would it be smart to put that kind of stuff in?

HOBBIES & INTERESTS

My interests are the outdoors, theatre, keeping fit and swimming.

in review of chippers resume here are my thoughts:

1. First, I'd suggest reading all of this thread before posting (if you haven't already). It may answer some of your questions and give you some better direction.

2. I'd replace "proven" experience with "professional" experience.

3. combine the first two core skills into one.

4. Replace the word "extensive" experience with something more measureable. The meaning of the word is too subjective and variable.

5. Unless your resume looks too thin, I'd shorten your work history list to 1-2 lines per job. Your core skills list could be elaborated on instead. That would be a better way to convey your skills than within the work history area.

6. Scrap the "hobbies and interests" section. It's irrelevant unless you're applying for a job at the Sports Chalet store!

I was going to make a post about getting help setting up my home network to remove all the inconsistancies but this thread caught my eye.

I would like to gain some critique on my CV. However since quitting my job I stopped my hosting and don't have anywhere to upload it to. If someone could PM me a place to upload it to or I could email it to them then that will be great.

It is heavily tabled in Word 2000 and looks good printed (IMO) but not so good in HTML.

Edit: Note: I'm also not a NetAdmin or DBA but a programmer, but I would like to have my CV looked over all the same (I should of checked if there is a similar thread in the programming section).

Well first I'd strongly suggest reading through this thread completely, see what has already been suggested, and apply that to your resume before posting. I don't mean to shut you down or anything but I am getting a little tired of making the same suggestions -in the same thread! So please look through all the previous resume tips and see what you can apply to your resume. I'm sure you will find plenty of ideas you can use right away. Then let's see how we can help you more specifically.

What would be an idea is to collate all the tips and suggestions into the first point - BobSutans post being the first. That way when someone clicks into the thread they will see a "READ THESE TIPS BEFORE POSTING".

btw - I have recieved absolutely nothing back from iUpload.net. Any other ideas (and don't mention GeoSh!tt!es or the like).

That sounds like a great idea. I'll start getting all the tips together and then give BobSutans a 'holler and see if we can edit the first post.

And if you still can't find any place to host your resume, drop me a line and I'll host it on Unofficial3D.com for 'ya.

I can't have that bad a resume. With absolutely no ASP knowledge, nor any of VB, or IIS I have made it through to second round of interviews! I have 6 days to implement a multi-tier project. Closest I have come to VB is Avenue (in ArcGIS 3.2a:)

It has been my experience that MOST resumes are rather poorly put together -not due to people just being stupid or anything, I'd say it's mainly due to poor instruction from a variety of so-called "employment assistance" places. The sheer amount of bad resumes I see on a nearly weekly basis is staggering. But that doesn't mean that I don't get anyone hired. It simply means that I, along with most HR people, have to work a lot harder to find out the information we're looking for -and answers to the questions we're asking like, "can this guy setup an Exchange2000 server?" or, "does he know how to drive a forklift?" Simple questions that are usually well stated (although not always) in the help wanted listing.

We've hired plenty of people with absolutely HORRIBLE resumes and cover letters! We just had to work hard to find out their skills -and not many HR departments do that.

How does my resume look? Any suggestions would be great... it's recently redone

AWESOME NEWS!!! congrats Bryan. Glad we could help you out. Nothing beats getting paid to do what you love. Believe me, I know. Good luck on your career.

BTW everyone, I haven't forgotten about putting together a "resume tips" guide or something to put at the top of this thread -kinda like a "read this first before posting here" sort of message. I'll probably work on it during Thanksgiving.

Cover Letters?

Guys, how important are cover letters? I usually just throw them in the email body and attach the resume...Is this ok? Should the cover letter be a scond attachment along with the resume or is it respectable as the email body?

Can someone please tell me if this cover letter sucks? I am so bad at this :(

Begin Cover Letter

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Ronnie Tartar,

I would like to express my interest in applying for the Desktop Position advertised on Monster.com (34741).
I am a trained IT professional with extensive knowledge in Windows 2000, XP, Advanced Server, Exchange, and Linux.

As an I.T. certified professional you will find
that I am quite knowledgeable about Windows 2000/2003 advanced servers and active directory domain infrastructure. I understand all principles of reliability
and security when it comes to server uptime. I have been employed by AT&T Wireless for the last five years as an Advanced Network Specialist specializing in the
organization of their wireless domain. I am familiar with proxy servers, Exchange mail servers, DNS, and DHCP servers. I am able to set up and proactively secure
active directory domains for all users.

As a student at Herzing College I learned practical skills in
Network security, system maintenance, advanced TCP/IP, and Cisco . Then as a Network Support Specialist for AT&T Wireless I was able to build upon my Windows 2000/2003
skills as well as learning Novell, Exchange, and Blackberry Enterprise Server. I feel that my extensive network experience and solid educational background has prepared me to
make an immediate contribution Marlin eSourcing Solutions.

Sincerely,

Carlos Williams

End Cover Letter

Thanks for any helpful feedback.

I've never had a need for one, so I don't include them. It has NOT made a difference in my job hunting :D

On a more serious note, they're generally not necessary unless the job listing specifically requires one.

I think it's a prefect cover letter. I also do the same thing (make it a part of the body of the email message and just attach my resume). Without reading the job description that you're applying for, I'd say the only thing to worry about is making sure that your cover letter hits most of the qualifications and requirements that the job posting lists. That's really the purpose of the cover letter: to make the connection between the job posting and your resume.

Looks good to me!

First off, this thread is a great idea. I have a few IT pro's looking at my resume as well.

Second, I would appreciate your input jmrobers70, and others. Thanks in advance.

Third, my "summary statement" is a bit shaky since this is not something I've been taught to use.

My Resume

I never got the job with the B2B company. I've been teaching myself more ASP, C#, .NET, IIS, SQL Server, Oracle, as well as writing as detailed as possible specs as training.

No one has commented on my Resume - I take it that you all think it is okay?

Well I've got a few things to say about your resume. Looks like I missed it when you posted it! I'll need to take a few moments tomorrow to do yours and Crashsector's.
