Is it possible to install 11.2 driver with old catalyst or is there an alternative?

I am not a fan of the new catalyst, I believe it was the cause of my system becoming irreversibly screwed up last time.
 
I don't think so. If you want a modern driver with old catalyst (I doubt CCC was the cause of your issues) then go 10.12a.
 
You can install the old CCC by downloading an old driver(10.12 WHQL is the one I used) and selecting the advanced install option. Then just select to install just the CCC and it'll overwrite the newer one. I had to do this because the new CCC in 11.1 didn't want to load half the time. 11.2 fixed all that though.

Alternately, if you already a driver with the old style CCC, when you download and install 11.2 go to the advanced install option and un-check CCC. Then it shouldn't update CCC while giving you the new driver.
