Im here in my apartment at school and me and my roommate have our own adelphia broadband connectiont that is hooked up to a linksys wireless router and 4 port switch, i use the swith and my rm uses the wireless. when i first hooked it up i put a password type thing so only he could get on the wireless. now, months later, the internet sucks. like i have trouble loading simple internet pages and even downloading simple 3 minute Windows media player files. and when i try to go to my "basic setup" page for the linksys router it wont even load.... WTF? Please help me guys! :(

If you're having problem logging into the router configuration page then the problem is with the router, not your internet connection. There should be a button on your router labled reset. Use it and then see if your router works again. It sounds like your router may be dieing. If you use bit torrent it could be screwing with your router because it opens so many connections. If you do use bit torrent, find the option in your client to limit connections and limit it to 50 or less.

dieing, but i just bought it like early august and my roommate gets excellent connection to it but i dont know if he is having any problems... but i guess its a possibility.

...and when i hit the reset button, should i have my computer already off? and when/if it comes back on, will i still have all the changes i made to it in the besic setup page? and if it doesnt come back on, is it dead for good?

I didn't realize there was nothing wrong with your roommate's connection. Can he access the router configuration page without problems?

You need to know how your room mates machine works on the internet now and what he is doing in case it affects you (ie is he maxing the connection, torrenting the router to death...).

Torrents can tie up all the connections in a router and even after being closed, quite often they do not free up.
This can effectively make the router useless until it is rebooted.

I reboot mine once a week approx now after limiting my max connections to 250.
Before that it was every few hours!
How many connections will work for you is dependant on your router, try and see.

If your friend is downloading lots of torrents and that is hosing the router, he will need to change his config or the problem wont go away.

yeah i went on his and he can access the router config page, and i see that he uses limewire and just going through a few pages and his history, probably for porn and music...it seems that a his internet is going perfectly fine too. can i do anything to the config to change it so he cant use all the internet for his shit?

edit: and i have been searching the router setup and i cant find a place to "limit my connections"?

Most SOHO (Small Office Home Office) routers that you can pick up at local retail stores don't have options to limit bandwidth. You can look on the internet for custom firmwares that may give you this option.

If your mates machine works fine when yours doesnt (when his has been stopped), something else is wrong.
Perhaps someone else is Hijacking your wireless connection, is it set up securely?
Check the support forums for your router to see if its a common problem.

but im pretty sure i put a secure feature on it that give out these 5 random keys that i gave to my roommate so only he could use it.... is there a way to see who is using the wireless connection off of my router?

(bump) i really need help on this, im starting to think maybe its not the router... because a few weeks ago, my computers internet went out all together (but the internet was working because my roommate could get online). then i turned off everything: modem, router and my pc and restarted them all and the internet worked... but very slowly and it has been this way ever since.

but while i was trying to figure out what was wrong back when the internet wasnt working i was messing with the "Network and Internet Connections" (set up..., create..., or change internet connection, etc.) in the control panel. Could i have accidentaly set up the wrong connection and thats why my internet is going so slow?

Can you tell us what you were doing and what has changed?
As much info as possible will help.

Try removing and re-installing TCP/IP:
Go into control panel and double click network connections.
Select your internet connection and right click/properties.
Select TCP/IP from the list and uninstall it.
If you have configured it for your network (ie you arent using DHCP), write the settings down before doing this.
Do the same for all other network adapters.
Once TCP/IP has been fully removed, reboot and reinstall TCP/IP in the same panels by installing protocol TCP/IP.
You may need to reboot again to complete.

If that fails, its possible your Windows Sockets (Winsock) stack has been corrupted.
This program will fix the problem if that is the case but it is a final resort as other things may have issues after running it.

Fortunately it can backup your config so that you can fully restore if it doesnt work for you.

Well, i went to bed and my computer was working just fine. i woke up the next morning and turned it on to find out that the internet for just my computer wasnt working at all (but my roommates was working, so was the router). but everything else on my computer was running fine. even the router and modem LEDs were fine. Being a slight nub i went into the network connections and tried making new/setting up new connections but nothing worked. So i finally shutdown the modem, router and my comp. then turned them all back on: modem, router, pc in that order. Then the internet worked, but after further analysis, my games were slightly laging and all website loaded terribley slow, along with simple downloads.

I dont think its the router but i will try reseting it, and getting a new ethernet cord as well (couldnt hurt). So removing and re-installing TCP/IP might fix this problem? and once i remove it, how exactly do i get it back again?
