Idiotic question regarding 8-pin CPU connector compatibility

I'm trying to reuse an old CMPSU-850TX I got around 2010 IIRC on a new build.

It has a 4+4 PIN CPU connector for the motherboard (ASUS Z97I-PLUS mITX) designed to clip together, and the motherboard has a 8-pin connector slot. The 4+4 PSU pins however do not match up to the square/hex pins on the motherboard, and only the split 4-pin will fit. The right part has no square shapes, but two of the pins should be square to fit.

Do I need to buy an adapter, or should I just pony up for a new modular power supply?

Edit: Disregard, this was me just being a tard. The rounded pins fit in square pins just fine, and the reason there are four rounded pins when the motherboard has two square and two rounded pins on the right is for backwards compatibility, since rounded will fit in square but not visa versa. So it fits just fine... like a glove, I was just paying too close of attention and anal when things don't match up perfectly. Just an FYI for any other retards like me on the forum that search for this issue later, heh!

Hex pins fits in square sockets. It should work. Have you actually tried plugging it in?

I might be wrong but unless u are overclocking, using only one of the 4 pins should work.

I was going to say this stuff has been standardized for years so all power supplies should have the right connectors for mobo / cpu power. Can you imagine though what a nightmare it would be if ATX specs didn't exist and you had to buy a specific power supply type for a specific mobo?
