Hi all,

I'm very confused about which memory to get for my i7 build. I'm planning on getting a Gigabyte EX58 UD5 Motherbord (I've read this supports DDR3 1600 - is this correct?) with an i7 920.

I'd like to overclock the 920. Would you say that its worth getting DDR1600 to go with it? I'd prefer to go with some DDR3 1333, purley to shave a few bucks off the build price? What do you recon?

Thanks,

Dave.

If you lower the ram multiplier to 6:1 (DDR3-800) from the default 8:1 (DDR3-1066) you'd need to run at a BCLK of 222 = 4.44gig to max your rams sticker speed out, noone's done a test to see if the slower ram has any real impact though.

thanks for your replies, i need all the help i can get on this!

A n00b question im affriad, would it be possible to run ddr3 1600 with an i7920 out of the box - no overclocking? (with a motherboard supporting ddr3 1600)

If you can spare the case the 1600 has more headroom for you to OC that 920. My ram is around 1520 I think with my current settings.

ahh right , thanks.

Out of interest, if i went with the DDR3 1600, and did no overclocking, would the RAM run at 1600? or slower?

If you did no overclocking then your cpu is 133 x 20 = 2.66ghz. Your memory would be 133 x 8 = 1066mhz. Would be a complete waste to get the 1600mhz ram. Unfortunately, you cant just plug in 1600mhz for the ram speed, it runs 6x or 8x the cpu bus speed.

So DDR3 1333 should be sufficient for pretty much any overclocking you're doing, assuming you keep the multiplier at 6?

I'm using ddr 1600 and i'm happy that I got it over the 1333 when it comes to overclocking. I was able to hit 3.8 GHz readily... its surprising sometimes that things like multipliers going too low can actually make you less stable. Its the only way I was able to pass 3.5 GHz.

What mobo are you using with that?

I'm considering the Gigabyte EX58-UD5, anyone got any thoughts ref overclocking on that board?
